Monster Fest 2015

The last few years has seen Monster Fest become Australia’s premiere horror film festival. Well this year Monster Fest is back bigger and better than ever… plus they have something to offer to music lovers as well as cinephiles.

As part of the first wave of announcements Monster Fest, which will be held at The Lido Cinemas in Hawthorn from the 26th-29th November, was the fact that a big part of this year’s festival will be Munsterpalooza, which is pretty much a rooftop concert hosted by the legendary Butch Patrick who played Eddie Munster in the hit television series The Munsters.

The bands announced to be performing at Munsterpalooza are Melbourne rockabilly outfit The Mighty Kings, punk rockers Murder Rats and the band that have best described as The Misfits vs The Ramones – Coffin Carousel. The unique thing about this concert, aside from the presence of Butch Patrick is of course that this will be held on the rooftop of one of Melbourne’s newest cinemas The Lido in beautiful Hawthorn.

Another band that has been announced to play at Monster Fest this year are the very unique The Tarantinos. A band who have made a name for themselves playing the tracks that have made the soundtracks of Quentin Tarantno movies like Pulp Fiction a must have for every music lover’s collection over the years. The Tarantinos will be playing at the Monster Fest closing night party which will follow one of the first Australian screenings of Keanu Reeve’s new film Knock Knock.

If you need more information about this year’s Monster Fest and Munsterpalooza just check out the https://www.facebook.com/events/163109424024746/ . Tickets for Musterpalooza are $50 and are available from the same event page.

OUR LOVE 3D REVIEWS & RATINGS:

David Griffiths:

Love 3D is not an easy movie to review. There are some people out there that will be very quick to label the film as pure porn. However to do that is a pretty immature thing to do. To do that would be like a patron of an art gallery likening a classic nude painting to a $2 stick magazine available in your local newsagent. It is a slippery slope but for the sake of at the best way to objectively look at Love 3D is to judge it in the way that you would any other kind of cinema.

Having said that though Love 3D is not the kind of film that some audience members are going to warm to very quickly. The film sees director/screenwriter Gasper Noe take a very alternative stance (some might say abrasive) to his audience. The film is confrontational in the fact that it does consist of some pretty graphic sex scenes (some of which are non-simulated sex) but is obvious what Noe was attempting to do. He wanted to create a film that looked at a relationship in the most naturalistic style available and to do that he has decided to take a route that not many filmmakers would be brave enough to do.

The one thing that needs to be pointed out about Love 3D is that the sex scenes do not get in the way of the story… in fact they are the story. Noe has actually done a great job of making sure everything works and quickly reveals that Murphy and Electra are a sexually charged couple who are more than willing to experiment. With sex being the thing that this couple revolve around the most it only seems natural that the film would also revolve the same theme. Noe also makes a good point of making sure that the film doesn’t go over the top all the time and in what might be a complete surprise to many this is actually a film with a fairly decent script and characterisation as well.

Such is the way that these characters are set-up it is very possible that a lot of audience members will in fact be emotionally involved by some of storylines and themes explored throughout the film. Few films, aside from Trainspotting of course, have ever shown such a graphic fall into the world of drug use and abuse like what happens to one of the characters here (I really don’t want to spoil it for anybody that hasn’t watched the film yet). The relationship between Murphy and Omi will also hit a chord with many audience members and some of the more harrowing scenes to watch in this film are the ones revolving around Murphy psychologically breaking as he realises that he is now trapped in a relationship that he doesn’t want to be in.

Knowing that a film has graphic sex in it can sometimes be a reason to question how decent the acting skills of the cast involved are going to be, but that shouldn’t be too much of a worry before you go into the cinema to watch Love 3D. Young Karl Glusman shows that he has the potential to be a star of the future. Whether it be a graphic sex scene or some of the scenes depicting his breakdown he puts in a good all round performance. He is also well backed up by Aomi Muyock and Klara Kristin who despite no previous acting experience put in some harrowing naturalistic performances.

Love 3D is not a film for everyone. If you find graphic sex in a film a turn off then you shouldn’t even bother to stand in line for the film, but if you don’t mind some alternative cinema that goes into a really dark place then this is a film that you’ll want to watch time and time again. Good characterisation, a decent script and believable acting performances make this film more than the stick-flick that some may easy write it off as.

Knock Knock Monster Pictures

After the first wave of announcements last week saw the release of the official Monster Fest 2015 poster, that SCARE CAMPAIGN would be the opening night film, plus the announcement that this year’s special guests will include the likes of Butch Patrick (The MUNSTERS), Fred Williamson (FROM DUSK TO DAWN) and Dee Wallace (E.T.), Monster Fest, Australia’s premier cult and horror film festival, is proud to announce the second stage of programming and ticket sales for Monster Fest 2015 – 26th to 29th of November at Australia’s newest home of cult cinema, The Lido Cinema in Hawthorn, Melbourne.

Over the coming weeks, the FULL PROGRAM ANNOUNCEMENT will include details of over 40 feature films – ‘Official Selection’ and retro gems, two short film programs – ‘Trasharama’ and ‘Monster Shorts’, more guests, bands, Monster Market, Munstapalooza horror hot rods, and more.

Meanwhile, here’s a fresh sack of treats for Monster Fest fans:

SCREENING OF AUSTRALIAN CULT CLASSICS: WOLF CREEK (10th ANNIVERSARY SCREENING) AND SMOKE ‘EM IF YOU GOT ‘EM

It’s been 10 years since Australian actor John Jarratt first morphed into the now legendary horror ‘baddie’ Mick Taylor and began menacing (and murdering) backpackers in the harsh Australian wilderness.

To celebrate Mick’s reign of bloody terror, MONSTER FEST is proud to announce that this year’s program will include a special 10th Anniversary Screening of director Greg McLean’s Aussie horror masterpiece, WOLF CREEK. Aside from John Jarratt (DJANGO UNCHAINED) WOLF CREEK also stars Cassandra Macgrath (SCARE CAMPAIGN), Kestie Morassi (TV’S SATISFACTION) and Nathan Phillips (THESE FINAL HOURS).

In 1988 Melbourne director Ray Boseley created one of the greatest cult movies ever produced in this country, SMOKE ‘EM IF YOU GOT ‘EM.  Released only on VHS back in the day, the film has built a dedicated fan base over the years, who have yearned to see it once again in all its big screen glory.

Cast and Crew from both films, including John Jarratt, Greg McLean, Ray Boseley and Clayton Jacobson will be attending and presenting Q&A sessions post screening.

A BREAKFAST SCREENING OF E.T WITH SPECIAL GUEST – DEE WALLACE

Remember that special feeling you felt when you first heard the adorable alien E.T. utter the words ‘ET phone home’ in Steven Spielberg’s 1982 Academy Award winning film E.T. THE EXTRA TERRESTRIAL?

Now fans (and newbies) of all ages can re-fall in love with E.T. as MONSTER FEST is proud to announce a special breakfast screening of E.T. THE EXTRA TERRISTRIAL during which fans will be able to meet actress Dee Wallace who plays Mary (the mother) in the family classic.

WORLD PREMIERE OF AUSTRALIAN FILMS – BULLETS FOR THE DEAD & CAT SICK BLUES

MONSTER FEST 2015 will see the World Premiere of a number of Australian films and we are proud to announce two of these today – BULLETS FOR THE DEAD and CAT SICK BLUES.

BULLETS FOR THE DEAD is directed by first time feature director Michael Du-Shane and tells the story of a hardened bounty hunter, a gang of outlaws in his trust and a preacher who are forced to work together and battle their way across the Wild West during the outbreak of a zombie apocalypse! The film stars Christopher Sommers (THE WATER DIVINER), Vanessa Moltzen (I AM EVANGELINE) , Hugh Parker (MY MISTRESS), Troy Mackinder (SANCTUM) and Emma Randall (DAYBREAKERS).

CAT SICK BLUES is an Aussie horror directed by another first timer, Melbourne filmmaker, Dave Jackson. CAT SICK BLUES tells the story of Ted Henson (Matthew C. Vaughan) whose beloved cat dies, triggering a total mental breakdown and prompting him to attempt to reanimate his feline friend – all he needs is nine human lives! This hilariously twisted and unique new film stars Shian Denovan (SAWNY: FLESH OF MAN) and Noah Moon (I’M YOU DICKHEAD).

CLOSING NIGHT FILM – KNOCK KNOCK

MONSTER FEST is proud to announce that the Official 2015 Closing Night Film will be director Eli Roth’s (HOSTEL, CABIN FEVER, THE GREEN INFERNO) latest film KNOCK KNOCK – a remake of the 1977 psychological thriller DEATH GAME. KNOCK KNOCK tells the twisted tale of a devoted husband and father who tries to do the right thing when 2 young women come knocking on his door looking for help. KNOCK KNOCK stars award-winning actor Keanu Reeves (THE MATRIX, SPEED, JOHN WICK), Lorenza Izzo (THE STRANGER, THE GREEN INFERNO) and Ana de Armas (OVERDRIVE, DAUGHTER OF GOD).

A Closing Night Awards Party, hosted by Melbourne’s ‘Queen of the Crypt’, Cherry Bites, follows the screening and will have festival goers rocking into the wee hours with a performance from much loved Melbourne rockers, ‘The Tarantino’s’!
