Opening October 10 with Hotel Mumbai stars Armie Hammer, Dev Patel and Tilda Cobham-Hervey on the red carpet, the Adelaide Film Festival has now unveiled the full stunning line-up of guests for 2018. Australians Wayne Blair, Benjamin Law, Justine Clarke, Warwick Thornton, Tess Haubrich, Erica Glynn, Margaret Pomeranz, David Stratton and Venice prize winners Jennifer Kent and Baykali Ganambarr will be joined by international guests including Jordan’s Widad Shafakoj, Denmark’s Clara Rugaard and Indonesia’s Kamila Andini for the eleven day screen spectacular.

 

Jennifer Kent, director of Venice Special Jury Prize winner and ADL Film Fest FUND film The Nightingale will walk the red carpet at the Australian Premiere with Baykali Ganambarr, winner of the Venice Film Festival’s Marcello Mastroianni Award for Best New Talent and former member of the internationally acclaimed Djuki Mala dance group, Jim Everett, associate producer and aboriginal consultant and producer Kristina Ceyton (The Babadook, Cargo).

 

Exciting young star of I Am MotherDanish actress Clara Rugaard, best known for playing Juliet in Still Star-Crossed with writer/director Grant Sputore and producer Timothy White

 

Multi-award winning filmmaker and humanitarian activist from Jordan, Widad Shafakoj will present the Australian Premiere of her doco, 17, which follows the Jordanian team’s journey to the FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup. Widad will also be part of a fascinating panel discussion on The Cinematic World of Arab Women with Arab Film Festival Australia Committee members Dr Mehal Krayem and Dr Paula Abood. 

Recipients of the Don Dunstan Award, indigenous screen pioneer Freda Glynn, her children, Erica Glynn, Warwick Thornton, and grandchildren Tanith Glynn-Maloney and Dylan River will be celebrated with a suite of events including the World Premiere of She Who Must Be Loved (directed by Erica, produced by Tanith), the launch of KIN, a collection of essays which recognise the remarkable contribution to the industry of this talented family, and screenings of Warwick’s 2003 debut Samson & Delilah, and Dylan’s much-anticipated documentary Finke: There and Back.

 

The World Premiere of ABC/NETFLIX thriller Pine Gap will see stars Tess Haubrich (Alien: Covenant, Wolf Creek 2) and Sachin Joab (Lion) walk the red carpet with director Mat King and producers. 

 

In Adelaide to present their films in the festival’s Feature Fiction Competition in partnership with University of South Australia’s School of Creative Industries is Australian mystery thriller Celeste director Ben Hackworth and Indonesian director Kamila Andini with her APSA and Berlinale Crystal Bear winning The Seen and Unseen. Also in competition, the festival welcomes the cast and crew of Australian feature Emu Runner including cast Wayne Blair, Rhae-Kye Waites, Mary Waites, Letisha Boney and Stella Carter with director/writer Imogen Thomas and producer Victor Evatt

 

The Flinders University Feature Documentary Competition title Happy Sad Man will be presented by filmmaker Genevieve Bailey (I Am Eleven) and subjects from her compelling documentary. 

 

Youtube sensation (10+ million subscribers) Ozzy Man will join filmmakers Jeremy Kelly-Bakker and Tom Phillips for the World Premiere of Lucy and DiC

 

Comedian, writer and creator of The Family Law, Benjamin Law and showrunner Sophie Miller for the series 3 World Premiere on the big screen. 

 

Star of Look Both WaysJustine Clarke and producer Bridget Ikin will be in conversation with Margaret Pomeranz following a special screening of Sarah Watt’s remarkable debut.

The International Feature Fiction Jury filmmaker and selector for Venice and selection committee for Cannes Directors FortnightPaolo Bertolin; Renowned South Australian director, Emmy, Peabody and multiple AFI award-winner Scott Hicks; and Sarah Perks writer, curator, film producer and Artistic Director of HOME in Manchester where she enables the investment and presentation of films created by artists.

 

The Flinders University Feature Documentary Competition will be determined by an all female, all award-winning Jury of filmmakers: lawyer, writer and filmmaker and Larissa Behrendt (After the Apology), multi-award winning editor Tania Nehme (Tanna, Ten Canoes) and award-winning writer, producer and director Madeleine Parry (Nanette).

 

The AFTRS Virtual Reality Competition jury consists of industry professionals at the forefront of screen making with emerging technologies, AFTRS Head of Cinematography Kim Batterham and Google Creative Lab’s Mathew Tizard. The final VR Jury member is internationally acclaimed artist and VR creative Sue Austin, who will present her underwater live art event ‘Creating the Spectacle!’ in a Southern Hemisphere premiere in two shows only at North Adelaide Aquatic Centre. 

 

Festival “faces’ Natasha Wanganeen (Cargo, Rabbit-Proof Fence) and Rashidi Edward (F*!#ing Adelaide) will be rubbing shoulders with the industry including Hotel Mumbai director/writer Anthony Maras, writer John Collee and producers Julie Ryan and Joe Thomas, plus Gillian Armstrong, in Adelaide for the SAFC’s inaugural Lottie Lyell AwardWIFT Australia’s Megan Riakos and Tracey Corbin-Matchett to launch the Raising Films Australia Survey, SPA’s Matt Deaner and The Wheeler Centre’s Sophie Black among many others!

Since 2013 ADL Film Fest has showcased the work of artists as they respond to premieres of the festival. In 2018 we welcome Alex Beckinsale, Cameron Smith, Cassie Thring, Christina Peek and Sarah Tickle who cover everything from mixed media and digital art to painting. Joining these artists is local legend Roy Ananda, known for his work inspired by film and pop culture. Roy will be working with these artists, all graduates of the Adelaide Central School of Art, to realise the most ambitious iteration of the Reactive Wall to date.

As part of the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia’s (NFSA) bid to restore some of the most iconic films made throughout Australian cinematic history the NFSA have just launched a Pozible campaign to help restore Jocelyn Moorhouse’s first film ‘Proof’ which also launched the careers of Hugo Weaving and Russell Crowe.

As an Ambassador for NFSA Margaret Pomeranz sat down with our very own Dave Griffiths to not only talk about the restoration project as a whole but also why ‘Proof’ has been selected as the next film to restore. IF you wish to donate to the campaign you can do so here.

Margaret And David

That most dazzling of cultural events, the Alliance Française French Film Festival, has good reason to be excited about its 26thannual season, with the news that revered film critics Margaret Pomeranz and David Stratton will be the Festival’s 2015 Patrons.

Beloved by movie aficionados throughout the country, Margaret and David will lend their distinctive ‘je ne sais quoi’ to the Festival, which continues to fascinate, enchant and captivate Australian audiences more with each passing year.

It’s no exaggeration to say that Margaret Pomeranz and David Stratton have enjoyed one of the longest and most enduring partnerships on Australian television.  Their deep love of cinema and lively repartee made At the Movies (ABC TV) and The Movie Show (SBS TV) essential weekly viewing for nearly three decades.

We are, therefore, deeply honoured to have this iconic duo as Patrons of the 2015 Festival.  And in celebration of this association, Margaret and David have had ‘carte blanche’ to select their favourite Festival titles. Here, in their own words, are their personal ‘picks’ of the Festival:

 

 

MARGARET’S SELECTION

3 HEARTS (3 Coeurs)

Director:           Benoît Jacquot  

Cast:                 Catherine Deneuve, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Chiara Mastroianni & Benoît Poelvoorde

Benoît Jacquot has created a sublime, if painful, romance with fate intervening in the lives of a taxman, played beautifully by Benoît Poelvoorde, and two sisters – sublime performances by Charlotte Gainsbourg and Chiara Mastroianni.  To add to that duo of fine European women, Jacquot has cast iconic Catherine Deneuve as their mother.  Mainly set in a provincial town south of Lyon, the coincidence of two sisters falling for the same man in a ‘coup de foudre’ is both bizarre and yet totally understandable.  The ramifications of that situation lead to a powerfully emotional film that references great romances of the past.  This a moving, unmissable movie experience.

 

FAR FROM MEN (Loin des Hommes)

 

Director:           David Oelhoffen

 

Cast:     Viggo Mortensen, Reda Kateb & Antoine Laurent

 

Viggo Mortensen must be one of the most adept film actors with language.  Here he speaks a slightly accented French, as befitting his heritage as Daru, the son of Spanish settlers in Algeria.  The year is 1954, the year the National Liberation Front began its uprising.  Daru is a teacher in a remote location and is aware of the tentative safety of his position.  Does he stay or go?  That decision is made for him when a prisoner Mohamed (a wonderful performance by Reda Kateb), is delivered to Daru with instructions to deliver him to the court in Tilsit, where he will almost certainly be found guilty of murder and executed.  Loosely based on a short story by Albert Camus, The Guest, Far From Men unravels in spectacular landscapes as an exploration of moral dilemmas in the guise of a Western.  Music by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis adds enormously to the atmosphere of this film by David Oelhoffen.

 

 

THE LAST HAMMER BLOW (Le Dernier Coup de Marteau)

Director:           Alix Delaporte

Cast:                 Romain Paul, Clotilde Hesme & Grégory Gadebois

If you remember Alix Delaporte’s debut film Angèle et Tony you will be impelled to see her second feature, in which the stars of Angèle et Tony, Clotilde Hesme and Grégory Gadebois once again occupy centre screen, but this time not so much together.  The connecting link in their relationship is their son Victor, an electric performance from young newcomer Romain Paul (who won the Marcello Mastroianni Award for Best Young Actor at the 2014 Venice International Film Festival). Victor lives with his mother, who is suffering from an unknown disease, in a trailer park on the edge of the sea.  He’s a talented young soccer player whose coach sees his potential.  His estranged father is a famous conductor who is visiting the nearby town of Montpellier to present a Mahler symphony.  Victor’s attempts to deal with his mother and connect with his father are the heart of this terrific film.  Delaporte has subtext down to a fine art.  Her scenes are subtle and incredibly moving.

DAVID’S SELECTION

 

DIPLOMACY (Diplomatie)

Director:           Volker Schlöndorff

Cast:                 Niels Arestrup, André Dussollier, Burghart Klaussner, Robert tadlober & Charlie Nelson

Volker Schlondorff’s intense adaptation of Cyril Gely’s 2011 play unfolds during the night of August 24-25, 1944 in the Hotel Meurice, the Paris hotel that serves as the headquarters of General Dietrich Choltitz, the German Governor of the occupied city. The Allies are at the city gates and, following Hitler’s orders, Choltitz is prepared to destroy the city and its monuments – until an intervention from Swedish diplomat Raoul Nordling, who, during an intense and emotionally charged argument, puts forward the case for saving the city.  Niels Arestrup as Choltitz and André Dussollier as Nordling, give commanding performances in this totally gripping drama.

 

THE BLUE ROOM (La Chambre Bleue)

Director:           Mathieu Amalric

Cast:                 Mathieu Amalric, Léa Drucker, Stéphanie Cléau, Laurent Poitrenaux & Serge Bozon

For his second feature film as director, Mathieu Amalric has turned to a book by crime writer Georges Simenon about a passionate small-town love affair that ends in death and retribution. Amalric himself plays Julien, a married man who embarks on a clandestine affair with Esther (Stéphanie Cléau).  Lovers of well-made thriller and tasteful eroticism will be amply rewarded by Amalric’s stylish and intelligent treatment.

TOKYO FIANCÉE (Tokyo Fiancée)

Director: Stefan Liberski

Cast: Pauline Étienne, Taichi Inoue, Julie Le Breton, Alice de Lencquesaing & Akimi Ota

This film recounts the experiences of Amélie a Belgian girl who attempts to make a life for herself in Japan. Stefan Liberski’s version of Amélie Nothomb’s eponymous novel gains enormous benefit from the charming central performance by Pauline Étienne, whose love of all things Japanese quickly develops into a passion for Rinri (Taichi Inoue), a rich youth who pays for her to give him lessons in French.

GRAND ILLUSION (La Grande Illusion)

Director: Jean Renoir

Cast: Jean Gabin, Dita Parlo, Pierre Fresnay, Julien Carette, Eric Von Stroheim

Jean Renoir’s timeless anti-war classic, made in 1937, stars Jean Gabin as a French POW during World War I. The screenplay, by Renoir and Charles Spaak, is based on a true story, and the film is memorable because of Renoir’s approach to friendship and the loyalties forged by class, so that the aristocratic French prisoner (played by Pierre Fresnay) has more in common with the German camp commandant (a great performance from legendary director Erich von Stroheim), than with his fellow countrymen.

One Eyed Girl

Hot on the heels of Austin Film Festival’s early line-up announcement which includes the World Premiere of  “One Eyed Girl”, The Backlot Films is proud to announce its plans to release the South Australian psychological thriller in Australian cinemas during the first quarter of 2015.

Starring Tilda Cobham-Hervey (52 Tuesdays) and Mark Leonard Winter (Healing, Van Demons Land), with a gripping screenplay by Matthews and Craig Behenna, One Eyed Girl follows the story of a psychiatrist (Winter) haunted by the death of a former patient, who stumbles upon a Doomsday cult and battles to save a teenage girl (Cobham-Harvey) from its clutches.

Co-founder and director of The Backlot Films, Tony Ianiro says, “Upon our first meeting with David Ngo many months ago, we encountered the same level of passion that he had for his craft which Mark (D’Angelo) and I have for Backlot. There was clearly a positive chemistry from the get go.

“David Ngo’s Projector Films, The Backlot Films and industry publicity and marketing specialists Jameson PR will combine to execute a fresh and unique campaign in the lead up to the theatrical release of ‘One Eyed Girl’ in 2015.

“In many respects, this is a unique project for us as it marks not only our involvement as distributor, but also as the first feature film in which The Backlot Studios, Melbourne was utilised to conduct the final audio mix, using our in house audio team at Backlot Post (Mark D’Angelo & Craig Jannson) in collaboration with one of the best audio re-record mixers in the world, Phil Heywood (The Lego Movie, The Great Gatsby, The Lord Of The Rings trilogy).

“The film itself is charismatic, honest and rich in production values, whilst the subject matter depicted in ‘One Eyed Girl’ – ‘a cult and its laws of attraction’ will remain with viewers long after they have witnessed it.

Our next phase is to introduce the film to our exhibition partners. We will create a long lead campaign and endeavour to get exhibition and media genuinely excited about One Eyed Girl in the lead up to its release.

“We are fortunate to have access to the filmmakers and key cast for in cinema Q&As across the country, pre-release – a strong indication that veryone attached to this project is committed…..it’s now time to make it happen!”

Produced by David Ngo and Co-Written by Craig Behenna, as part of the SA Film Corporation’s Filmlab program, this film creates a confronting indictment of an ethically lost and alienated society where the blind indeed seem to lead the blind.

Ngo says, “We are so excited to have our film open at the prestigious Austin Film Festival. To know your film will screen in front of people like Tommy Lee Jones, James Franco, Matthew Weiner and Lawrence Kasdan is a huge honour and also, quite frankly, scary as hell.

“We can’t wait to then follow this up with the release in Australia with Backlot. As a filmmaker there’s nothing quite like watching people lining up and buying popcorn to see your movie.

“There’s no doubt the cast will go on to do many big things. Hollywood’s already knocking on young Tilda’s door and I think people will be blown away by Mark’s performance. He really reminds me of a young Daniel Day Lewis.”

The “One Eyed Girl” creative team was selected by a panel of assessors including Margaret Pomeranz (At The Movies), and producer Bridget Ikin (My Year Without Sex, Look Both Ways) to develop the film through the SAFC’s FilmLab program where they were mentored by acclaimed filmmaker Rolf de Heer (Charlie’s Country, Ten Canoes, Bad Boy Bubby).

After two years of writing, casting began in 2012 and used a combination of traditional avenues and social media to discover some of its younger cast members. Having already cast Mark Leonard Winter in the lead male role of Travis, the ‘Search for Grace’ and ‘Search for Marcus’ online campaigns attracted over 600 applicants from all over the world and finally chose Matthew Crook to play Marcus and for the title role, then seventeen year old Tilda Cobham-Hervey, who has been described by Variety magazine as one of five up-and-coming actresses to watch. The film also stars Steve Le Marquand (Rake, Vertical Limit).

Filming began in December 2012 on an isolated farm in the hills of Adelaide. This hugely ambitious film was also the first feature for many of the heads of department – Production Designer Anny Duff, Cinematographer Jody Muston and Make-Up Artist Rebecca Buratto.

“One Eyed Girl” will open in Australian cinemas in early 2015, distributed by The Backlot Films.
