The Astor Theatre

The new Astor Theatre calendar has been revealed and is now available online at www.astortheatre.net.au. The much-loved calendar, featuring the coming three months of films scheduled for the Astor, will also be mailed to over 20,000 Victorian film fans this week.

The calendar features a carefully curated selection of classic and new release films and sees the return of long-standing favourite, the Astor double-feature. Showing at 7.30pm each Wednesday night, the double features kick off with GET CARTER and POINT BLANK on June 10; THE GOONIES and BEETLEJUICE on June 17; and a trip through bat country with FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS and REPO MAN to round out June.

Screenings on celluloid remain alive and well at the Astor, with Palace Cinemas making good on their promise to retain both 35mm and 70mm formats for the new program. Time-honoured Astor staples POLTERGEIST, ALIENS, BARAKA and HAMLET are all back for screenings on 70mm, while Martin Scorsese’s MEAN STREETS and the brilliant Ken Russell film THE DEVILS will be shown on rare 35mm prints sourced by new manager, Zak Hepburn.

Director Gillian Armstrong’s new documentary, WOMEN HE’S UNDRESSED will premiere on Thursday June 25 with a red carpet gala event to celebrate the re-opening of the Astor. Armstrong, a Melbourne local, will appear at the gala to introduce the film, which looks at the career of the largely unknown Australian costume designer Orry-Kelly who dressed the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Bette Davis and Ingrid Bergman during Hollywood’s golden age of cinema. In tribute to Orry-Kelly’s career, the Astor’s forthcoming film program will showcase his handiwork in MALTESE FALCON, ARSENIC AND OLD LACE, CASABLANCA and SOME LIKE IT HOT.

The Astor Theatre re-opens to the public on Sunday June 7 and tickets for all sessions and for the opening night gala event will be available from Friday 21 May via www.astortheatre.net.au or www.palacecinemas.com.au

Television sitcom have been a popular form of entertainment for years. Today, shows such as “Big Bang Theory” and “Two And A Half Men” constantly dominate the ratings. The popularity of these sitcom make the stars of the show become household names, so it’s not a surprise that many of them decide to try their hand at big screen films. So let’s take a look at the big Hollywood actors who started off their careers on television sitcom.

Jennifer Aniston: In the 1990s, “Friends” was the biggest sitcom on television. It seemed like everybody right around the world tuned in to see their five friends each week. It was therefore no surprise that Matt Le Blanc, Matthew Perry, Lisa Kudrow, Courtney Cox and Jennifer Aniston decided to all try their hand at big screen acting. For Matt Le Blanc, it didn’t take off – Kudrow, Cox and Perry found a small amount of success but Jennifer Ainston hit the big time. While “Friends” was still airing, Aniston showed she had what it took to make it outside the television world by appearing in films such as “Picture Perfect,” “Rock Star” and “Bruce Almighty.” However, it was after “Friends” ended that she became one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars and since then has appeared in notable films including “Marley & Me,” “He’s Just Not That Into Me,” “Just Go With It,” “Horrible Bosses” and one of the best comedies of 2013 – “We’re The Millers.” Yes, Jennifer Aniston is very much a Hollywood A-Lister.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt: Joseph Gordon-Levitt was always destined to be a sitcom star. One of his earliest acting performances was in “Family Ties,” while as a teenager he became known for his role as a teenage alien in the kooky “3rd Rock From The Sun.” After the show folded in 2001, it did take Gordon-Levitt a little bit of time to establish himself as a serious actor. Roles in movies like “Mysterious Skin” and “Brick”saw him receive critical acclaim but only minimal popularity. That has certainly changed over the last few years though when he has acted in huge blockbusters like “Inception,” “The Dark Knight Rises” and  Looper.” While he has also been great in those films, he has kept the critical reception going by also appearing in “(500) Days Of Summer” and “50/50.”

Steve Carell: There is no doubting that one of the funniest men on the planet these days is actor Steve Carell. Carell had done a number of television shows over the years before he was selected to star in the American version of “The Office” playing the big boss himself Michael Scott. Since taking on the role, Carell has gone from hit movie to hit movie. He has made a name for himself in comedy circles with films like “The 40 Year Old Virgin,” “Evan Almighty” and “The Incredible Burt Wonderstone,” while more serious films like “Little Miss Sunshine,” “Dan In Real Life” and “The Way Way Back” has shown that he is an actor that is capable of so much more than just comedy. He is such a big star these days that he even got to live out one of his dreams and play Maxwell Smart on the big screen.

Leonardo DiCaprio: Yes, one of the biggest actors of today actually made his start into acting in television sitcom. One of DiCaprio’s first appearances on screen came in 1990 when NBC tried to turn the movie “Parenthood” into a television sitcom. After it failed, DiCaprio then appeared in the final season of “Growing Pains” as a young homeless person who came to live with the Beaver family. That was of course before DiCaprio wowed film lovers with his performances in films such as “The Basketball Diaries” and “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape.” Of course, today DiCaprio is still hot Hollywood property working regularly with the legendary director Martin Scoresese, while also appearing in big blockbusters such as “Titanic,” “Inception,” “The Great Gatsby” and “Django Unchained.”

Robin Williams: Perhaps one of the most famous actors to come out of a television sitcom has been Robin Williams. Over the years, Williams has appeared in iconic films such as “Dead Poets Society,” “Good Will Hunting” and “Jumanji,” but it seems that most people forget that the role that made him famous was playing naive alien York in television sitcom “Mork & Mindy” which hit the airwave in 1978. His character of Mork also crossed over to be with The Fonze in “Happy Days.” You can only wonder how many people who tuned into “Mork & Mindy” would have predicted that the zany Robin Williams would have one day freaked out audiences in the chilling “One Hour Photo.”

With so many sitcom stars today considered Hollywood royalty, you can only watch the modern day sitcoms and wonder who will be the next Jennifer Aniston or Leonardo DiCaprio in ten years’ time.

Seduced And Abandoned

Summary: Alec Baldwin and filmmaker James Toback are on a mission: to remake Bernardo Bertolucci’s legendary 1972 film Last Tango in Paris by setting it in Iraq in the mid-2000s. Hobnobbing their way around Cannes, the wisecracking duo meet up with a who’s who of the film industry , including Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Ryan Gosling and Bertolucci himself, as they try to find money, a script and a cast for their impossible idea.

Seduced and Abandoned is the delightful and utterly uncategorisable new pseudo-documentary from veteran director James Toback. A riff on the harsh economics of modern film turned unlikely buddy comedy, it’s a glimpse into the funny film business and a gleeful homage to a lost time when film was made for film’s sake.

OUR SEDUCED AND ABANDONED REVIEWS & RATINGS:

Seduced And Abandoned is a hard documentary to explain. Not just for this lowly reviewer but you get a feeling that even the guys responsible for this film may have some trouble trying to pinpoint what the exact focus of this documentary actually is. This reeks as the kind of film that may have sounded like a good idea when a group of friends got together over a few drinks, but sadly when it reaches the big screen it becomes a meandering film that was well deserved of the walk outs it received at the screening I was at.

At the heart of Seduced And Abandoned are film director James Toback (Tyson, When Will I Be Loved) and actor Alec Baldwin (Blue Jasmine, TV’S 30 Rock) who have come up with the idea of remaking the classic Last Tango In Paris but setting it in Bush-era Iraq. It seems the original concept of the documentary was show them travelling to the Cannes Film Festival on a mission to receive backing for the film, but somewhere along the way the film got railroaded and ended up becoming a look at the history of the Film Festival itself and also how the likes of Ryan Gosling, Roman Polanski and Martin Scorsese got their starts in Hollywood.

One of the things that makes Seduced And Abandoned such a strange documentary is that seems that Baldwin and Toback really wanted this to be the kind of film that really celebrates cinema. Certainly that seems to be what is happening when they sit down and talk to Polanski, Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola and Bernardo Bertolucci, but during the film it actually begins to show the darkside of the industry – a side where people such as Neve Campbell and Oscar winner  Berenice Bejo find themselves as being described as ‘unmarketable.’

If Toback and Baldwin wanted Seduced And Abandoned to showcase themselves in the realm of a vanity piece then they certainly failed in their mission. Instead Toback comes across as a pushy director who believes that he deserves to be credited alongside the Scorseses and Coppolas of this world while Baldwin seems to be an actor who refuses to acknowledge that he is no longer a Hollywood leading man. At times this comes across as a poorly directed and cheaply edited wank fest, although it is kind of fun to watch as Baldwin gets put in his place by several producers and even an Australian film distributor.

Having said that though there are some highlights during Seduced And Abandoned. Hearing the likes of Ryan Gosling and Diane Kruger talking about what it means to be an actor in Hollywood these days is an interesting piece of cinema, as is hearing some of the legendary directors that we all look up to talking about their careers and what film-making means to them. Those interviews are absolutely priceless for young filmmakers out there.

Seduced And Abandoned ultimately fails at its major goals and is only made watchable by a couple of interviews that touch on some cinematic magic.

The bells rang at the close of trade yesterday and there was one clear winner: Martin Scorsese’s THE WOLF OF WALL STREET soared its way to the top of the Australian box office. Grossing $1.016m across 228 locations, the critically acclaimed black comedy had the biggest opening day for an R18+ film in Australian history.

Director Martin Scorsese has excavated the terrain of the American crime drama from multiple angles – but with The Wolf Of Wall Street he goes straight to the edge with a tale from the outrageous and darkly comic realm of our most contemporary variety of criminal extortion: high finance.

Nominated for five Academy Awards and four BAFTAs, the film stars Leonardo DiCaprio in his Golden Globe winning role, Jonah Hill, Margot Robbie, Matthew McConaughey, Kyle Chandler and Rob Reiner.

Based on a true story, The Wolf of Wall Street follows the outlandish rise and non-stop pleasure-hunting descent of Jordan Belfort (DiCaprio), the New York stockbroker who, along with his merry band of brokers, makes a gargantuan fortune by defrauding investors out of millions.

The film follows Belfort’s wild ride as he transforms from a righteous young Wall Street newcomer to a thoroughly corrupted stock-pumper and IPO cowboy.

Having quickly amassed an absurd fortune, Jordan pumps it back into an endless array of aphrodisiacs: women, Quaaludes, coke, cars, his supermodel wife and a legendary life of aspiration and acquisition without limits.

But even as Belfort’s company, Stratton Oakmont, soars sky-high into extremes of hedonistic gratification, the SEC and the FBI are zeroing in on his empire of excess.

The Wolf of Wall Street was released nationally on January 23 and is rated R18+

First I do have to admit a real bias when I am reviewing The Wolf Of Wall Street – I am an avid Martin Scorsese film and also an avid Leonardo DiCaprio, yes I have been in heaven for the past few years while they are collaborated together on five films. And yes while films such as Shutter Island and The Departed would make my ‘Greatest Films Ever Made’ list, I am not biased enough to admit that these two have made some ordinary films together, especially The Aviator.

So where does The Wolf Of Wall Street fit on the Leonardo DiCaprio/Martin Scorsese scale. Well to be honest it is pretty bloody high up, because this is a good… no make that… great film. But to preface that I should say this film does go above and beyond to get its R18+ rating because Scorsese has pretty much made a film about a world of sleaze.

Under Scorsese’s wonderful direction DiCaprio plays Jordan Belfort, a young man who is introduced into the world of Wall Street finance by the ‘out there’ Mark Hanna (Matthew McCounaughey) who teaches Jordan the things he needs to succeed are cash, drugs and sex… and that you get them anyway you can.

Jordan’s first journey into Wall Street though doesn’t last after the crash of 1987 and soon Hanna disappears out of the picture and Jordan is left to resurrect himself, this time through a backyard operation that pretty much just sells worthless penny deals. But Jordan sees promise in that and soon he, and his new found buddy the loud Donnie Azoff (Jonah Hill), begin their new operation that has the sole aim of making them money.

Once Jordan is once again wealthy he again reaches Wall Street doing illegal deal after illegal deal while his weaknesses are still cash, drugs and sex… this time with his future wife, the beautiful Naomi Lapaglia (Margot Robbie). Everything is going well until a Federal Agent (played by Kyle Chandler) starts sniffing around Jordan and aims to bring him down.

With The Wolf Of Wall Street Scorsese is once again at the top of his game. He is cunning with the way that he tells this story – yes at times he glorifies the sick lifestyle that Jordan lives, but he also dramatically shows the downside of this lifestyle to the point where anybody watching the film would be an idiot to want to get involved in the finance world. At times Jordan appears to be a God, but that image is shattered when Scorsese allows the grime to reach the surface in shocking acts such as seeing Jordan punch his wife in the stomach. Those that criticize The Wolf Of Wall Street and point out that Scorsese is trying to glorify this film are on the wrong track completely because he is trying to do anything but that.

The critics that have pointed out that Scorsese goes back and reuses some of his old Goodfellas style are right, but always the inventor Scorsese also uses comedy to full affect in The Wolf Of Wall Street… perhaps to give his audience a rest from the onslaught, while he is also creative in the way that he allows Jordan to narrate this film, especially in the sense that Jordan seems to be able to pick and choose what he feels the audience will understand. He may be in his seventies but at least Scorsese is still a director willing to try new things.

Once again Scorsese also gets the best out of Leonardo DiCaprio. Just like he did in Django Unchained DiCaprio relishes the fact that he gets to play an unlikable character here and he is well deserved of all the awards he has been nominated for. But this isn’t just the DiCaprio show, oh no Matthew McConaughey steals the show with his brief performance, Kyle Chandler is once again smooth in his role while Jonah Hill provides more than just comedic relief showing that he is a genuine dramatic actor these days. However the person that deserves a big tick for The Wolf Of Wall Street is Australian actress Margot Robbie who shows that she is more than just a pretty face and delivers some intense acting during her sometimes vicious scenes with DiCaprio. Yes she well and truly deserves her ‘star on the rise’ label.

As previously mentioned The Wolf Of Wall Street is not a film that will be enjoyed by all. It is a powerful, and yes at times graphic film. It may be a little long (some of the scenes wouldn’t have suffered if the editor had been a bit more brutal) but this film once again shows why Martin Scorsese is a living legend when it comes to filmmaking.

Movie loving Melbourne audiences have given Cinema Nova a reason to celebrate the start of 2014 by breaking the arthouse venue’s record for biggest week at the box office.

From Boxing Day to New Year’s Day (26/12/2013 – 1/1/2014) Cinema Nova enjoyed its highest grossing week ever at the box office, notably by screening upscale and arthouse features; a reassurance that Melbourne movie goers are not only interested in Hollywood blockbusters.
