MIFF Premiere Fund

The State Government of Victoria has delivered a $900,000 renewal of the Melbourne International Film Festival MIFF Premiere Fund, which provides strategic minority co-financing to new Australian films that then go on to premiere at MIFF.

“The MIFF Premiere Fund’s continuation is important for MIFF, audiences, local filmmakers, and the State’s creative economy,” said MIFF Chair Claire Dobbin. “Generating a pipeline of world premieres for MIFF, and screenings for the MIFF Premiere Regional Showcase, the Premiere Fund helps MIFF remain the Southern Hemisphere’s leading film event.”

“Together with MIFF 37ºSouth Market & Accelerator, the MIFF Premiere Fund reinforces Melbourne’s position as a creative industries capital,” said MIFF Industry Director and Premiere Fund Executive Producer Mark Woods. “Securing finance for independent Australian films is always a challenge and the contribution of the Premiere Fund has helped close the financing gap on some 45 films. The Fund is also proud of its part in fostering diversity and equality with nearly 50% of the Premiere Fund titles having feature debut directors, 31% having female directors and 53% female producers, while 13% had indigenous elements, 29% CALD community elements and 9% LGBTI engagement.”

The MIFF Premiere Fund is one of a suite of MIFF Industry Programs, which also include MIFF 37ºSouth Market, Australia’s only festival-based movie financing market, and the MIFF Accelerator emerging director workshop.

With combined budgets of more than $100 million, the MIFF Premiere Fund’s 45 films include the likes of BRAN NUE DAE starring Geoffrey Rush, BALIBO starring Anthony LaPaglia, THE TURNING featuring Cate Blanchett, Rose Byrne and Hugo Weaving, feature documentaries ELECTRIC BOOGALOO and IN BOB WE TRUST and the recent hit children’s film PAPER PLANES, starring Sam Worthington and David Wenham, that grossed nearly $10 million at the local box office. Following their world premieres at MIFF, the MIFF Premiere Fund-supported films also tour regionally with the MIFF Premiere Regional Showcase and have been selected for numerous overseas festivals including Cannes, Berlin, Toronto and Sundance.

“I strongly believe our industry in Victoria and MIFF is elevated by the significant opportunities the MIFF Premiere Fund provides and so it is wonderful that the Government is continuing the MIFF Premiere Fund,” said Seph McKenna, Head of Australian Production at Roadshow Films, the distributor of MIFF Premiere Fund-supported Bran Nue Dae, These Final Hours and this year’s family hit, Victorian Director Rob Connolly’s Paper Planes. “The MIFF Premiere Fund is an investment by the Government that guarantees Melbourne remains Australia’s premier film festival for all its constituencies from punter to filmmaker.”

“It is imperative for the state of filmmaking in Victoria that both the MIFF Premiere Fund and MIFF 37ºSouth Market continue to thrive and so I am thrilled that the Government is renewing the MIFF Premiere Fund,” said Lizzette Atkins who produced Rock N Roll Nerd, The Triangle Wars, Aim High In Creation and the upcoming Looking for Grace (starring Richard Roxburgh and Radha Mitchell) with MIFF Premiere Fund assistance. “Speaking from experience, the MIFF Premiere Fund can play a critical role in a project reaching its final budget.”

“I am delighted the State Government will continue to support the MIFF Premiere Fund,” said Antony I Ginnane, who produced Last Dance and Patrick with MIFF Premiere Fund support. “The MIFF Premiere Fund has punched above its weight and each individual contribution it has made to fiction and documentary features has helped expand the quantum of Victorian production and provide vital employment.”

“I fully support the MIFF Premiere Fund – one of the most amazing film funds in Australia – if not the world!” said Veronica Fury who produced Machete Maidens Unleashed, Curse of the Gothic Symphony, First Fagin, Electric Boogloo and the upcoming Neon with MIFF Premiere Fund assistance. “It is a valuable and critical asset to Victoria and to Melbourne and so I am thrilled that the Government will allow this valuable and vital Fund to continue.”

“I wholeheartedly applaud the continuation of the MIFF Premiere Fund and its work in keeping Victorian independent film on the national and international landscape,” said producer/director Richard Lowenstein who, with Lynn-Maree Milburn, has made feature documentaries Auto Luminescent, In Bob We Trust and the upcoming Ecco Homo with MIFF Premiere Fund support.

“Finding financial support for films by new directors is increasingly difficult and the Government’s continuation of the MIFF Premiere Fund is very important for Victorian filmmakers,” said producer Philippa Campey who has produced Bastardy and Galore with MIFF Premiere Fund assistance. “I wholeheartedly support the continuation of this pivotal Fund which has become a fundamental part of our local sector and will be increasingly critical in the future with its support of quality, independent feature-length projects.”

“The wonderful thing about the MIFF Premiere Fund is it invigorates the 37ºSouth Market at MIFF and connects Victorian film-makers into the international film financing system opening up opportunities for networking and co-production that would otherwise not be there,” said producer John Moore who is producing the upcoming Putuparri & The Rainmakers with MIFF Premiere Fund support.

Entertainment One Australia is proud to have three Australian films screening at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Rolf de Heer’s deeply affecting portrait of contemporary Aboriginal Australia CHARLIE’S COUNTRY, Kriv Stender’s darkly comedic thriller KILL ME THREE TIMES – which will also have its World Premiere at the festival – and Tony Ayres’ crime drama CUT SNAKE.

All three films will screen in TIFF’s Contemporary World Cinema section, which showcases films with compelling stories from global perspectives.

An Official Selection and awarded Best Actor in the Un Certain Regard section at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival this year, CHARLIE’S COUNTRY pairs renowned director Rolf de Heer with screen legend David Gulpilil for their third film collaboration following the multi-award winning Ten Canoes and their first feature The Tracker.

CHARLIE’S COUNTRY tells the story of blackfella Charlie (Gulpilil), who is getting older and is out of sorts. Frustrated with the failures of the government intervention and the ‘whitefella’ laws enforced in his remote community, Charlie takes off to live the old way. But in doing so he sets off a chain of events in his life that has him return to his community chastened, and somewhat the wiser.

In KILL ME THREE TIMES, Simon Pegg plays the mercurial assassin, Charlie Wolfe, who discovers he isn’t the only person trying to kill the siren of a sun drenched surfing town. Charlie quickly finds himself at the centre of three tales of murder, mayhem, blackmail and revenge. KILL ME THREE TIMES was produced by Western Australian producer Tania Chambers, Laurence Malkin and Share Stallings (Death at a Funeral, A Few Best Men).

Shot in stunning locations throughout Western Australia, KILL ME THREE TIMES stars Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, The World’s End), Sullivan Stapleton (300: Rise of an Empire, Animal Kingdom, Strike Back), Alice Braga (I Am Legend, Elysium, City of God), Teresa Palmer (Warm Bodies, Wish You Were Here), Callan Mulvey (Zero Dark Thirty, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Turning, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), Luke Hemsworth (The Reckoning) and Bryan Brown (F/X, Cocktail).

CUT SNAKE is a powerful crime drama set in mid-70s suburban Australia from Matchbox Pictures’ Tony Ayres (The Home Song Stories). The story centres around Sparra Farrell (Alex Russell, Carrie), a young man trying to escape his past and make a life for himself in a new city. He finds honest work and becomes engaged to the beautiful Paula (Jessica De Gouw, These Final Hours). But when the charismatic and dangerous Pommie (Sullivan Stapleton) tracks him down, Sparra finds himself drawn back into a world that he had tried to leave behind.

Of CHARLIE’S COUNTRY, KILL ME THREE TIMES and CUT SNAKE screening at TIFF, Troy Lum, Managing Director of Entertainment One Australia, says, “We are very proud to have three incredible Australian films screening at Toronto. In addition to CHARLIE’S COUNTRY, KILL ME THREE TIMES and CUT SNAKE, Entertainment One Australia has a host of international films that will screen at TIFF this year including: MY OLD LADY; THE GOOD LIE; MAPS TO THE STARS; and BLACK AND WHITE. MY OLD LADY, THE GOOD LIE and BLACK AND WHITE will all have their World Premieres at the festival.

The Toronto International Film Festival runs from September 4-14, 2014.

CHARLIE’S COUNTRY is currently screening in cinemas across Australia. KILL ME THREE TIMES and CUT SNAKE will be released in early 2015.

The Infinite Man

Following the sellout Australian Premiere at the Melbourne International Film Festival, the inventive time travel comedy The Infinite Man is confirmed for a theatrical release in cinemas across Australia September 18 through Infinite Releasing. The international and local accolades keep coming for the film and its writer/director Hugh Sullivan, who just this weekend won the Best First Feature award at the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal, Canada.

Hedone Productions also today announced that The Infinite Man has sold to Invincible Pictures for distribution, including a theatrical release, in the US. Since the acclaimed world premiere at SXSW in March 2014, The Infinite Man has had selected US screenings, including on a Brooklyn rooftop for the New York Premiere, at California’s Newport Beach Film Festival and at the Las Vegas Film Festival. Also in North America it has screened at Canada’s Niagara Integrated Film Festival, where Hannah Marshall took out the Best Actress Award.

 Another two prestigious local premiere screenings have been confirmed ahead of the release. The Infinite Man has been selected to screen at WA’s Cinefest Oz as the Margaret River Premiere Film Event on Thursday 21 August and as the Opening Night Green Carpet Gala presentation of NSW’s Dungog Festival on Friday August 29.

 Starring Josh McConville (The Turning), Hannah Marshall and Alex Dimitriades, THE INFINITE MAN was a smash hit at the 2014 South by Southwest Film Festival, where it made the time.com list of ‘ten films that made SXSW spectacular this year’, alongside Grand Budapest Hotel and Chef and won the Indiewire Critic’s Pick for Best Screenplay and Best First Feature. 

 Australian media have also praised the debut feature from writer/director Hugh Sullivan, with The Music heralding it as ‘One of this century’s great local debuts’, The Age’s Craig Mathieson calling it ‘wonderfully inventive…a kind of deadpan scientific screwball that is delightful’, Luke Buckmaster for The Guardian billing it as one of the ten unmissable films at MIFF, ‘joyfully inventive…a rare find’ and Russell Edwards for SBS crowning it ‘one of the smartest Australian films ever made’.

 Infinite Releasing is an initiative of Jonathan Page (Executive Producer of The Babadook, Mary and Max, 100 Bloody Acres) and The Infinite Man producers Kate Croser (My Tehran for Sale, TV’s Danger 5) and Sandy Cameron. Jonathan Page said of the release announcement ‘We are delighted with the audience response to the film both at home and abroad and we are very excited to have the film confirmed for a release in cinemas nationally. The film generated a fantastic response at the MIFF Australian Premiere, and we are very pleased it has been selected for premiere and gala screenings at both Cinefest Oz and the Dungog Festival ahead of the release.’

It is with Texas-sized pleasure that Hedone Productions announces today that the World Premiere of Australian feature film The Infinite Man has been confirmed for the prestigious South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in the US in March. The Infinite Man is the only Australian film selected to screen in the ‘Visions’ section of the festival, which presents audacious, risk-taking artists in the new cinema landscape that demonstrate raw innovation and creativity in narrative filmmaking.

2014 marks the 20th year of SXSW Film, which has grown rapidly in recent years, with Variety observing that ‘the industry will look back at 2013 as a game-changer for SXSW’. Encompassing music and interactive technologies as well as film, the festival is uniquely positioned as a creative hub like no other, with the Sydney Morning Herald last week nominating SXSW as one of the ten festivals to change your life. SXSW Film takes place in Austin, Texas from 7 – 15 March.

The anticipated feature debut from director Hugh Sullivan, starring Josh McConville, Hannah Marshall and Alex Dimitriades, The Infinite Man is a time travel comedy-romance about Dean (Josh McConville), a man whose attempts to construct the perfect romantic weekend backfire when he traps his lover Lana (Hannah Marshall) in an infinite loop.

 The Infinite Man is the anticipated feature film debut of writer/director Hugh Sullivan whose short films have screened in official selection at the Palm Springs International Shortfest, Flickerfest and the Melbourne International Film Festival. As a winner of the Spirit of Youth Award – Moving Pictures in 2006, Hugh received a one-year mentorship with director Phillip Noyce.

 The Infinite Man stars acclaimed actor Josh McConville (Underbelly, Wild Boys, Redfern Now) in his first feature film lead role as the gifted scientist and control freak Dean. Widely regarded for his work on the stage, Josh was crowned Best Actor at the Sydney Theatre Awards in 2013 for his role in Griffin Theatre’s The Boys. Josh’s feature film debut came in 2013 in David Wenham’s directorial debut Commission from the celebrated anthology film The Turning, in which he starred starring alongside Hugo Weaving.

Hannah Marshall, who stars as Dean’s girlfriend Lana, is best known for her role as Loretta Schembri in Packed to the Rafters, one of the highest rating shows on Australian television, for which received a Logie nomination for Most Popular New Female Talent (2011). AACTA award winner Alex Dimitriades (The Slap, Head On) stars as Lana’s ex-boyfriend, the disgraced 1980s Olympian, Terry.

 The film is produced by Hedone Productions’ Kate Croser (Danger 5, 100 Bloody Acres) and Sandy Cameron. Croser also produced My Tehran For Sale, which was filmed in Tehran and went on to screen in Official Selection at Toronto, Vancouver, Busan and Rotterdam International Film Festivals and won the IF Independent Spirit Award (2009). Cameron Rogers and Jonathan Page (Mary and Max, The Babadook) are Executive Producers.

 The Infinite Man was produced by Hedone Productions in association with Bonsai Films, with investment from the South Australia Film Corporation (SAFC) through their FilmLab funding initiative, and development assistance from Screen Australia.

 FilmLab is a $4.2million development initiative of the South Australian Film Corporation (SAFC), funded by the South Australian government. Designed to develop filmmakers who have a track record in short form to take the next step into long form film production, the initiative was also built to find unique new voices in Australian cinema.

The Infinite Man will be released in Australian cinemas in 2014 by Infinite Releasing with international sales handled by Shoreline Entertainment.

Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk today announced that three Australian films, Mystery Road, anthology film The Turning, and Tracks, have received nominations across three major categories for the 7th annual Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA), the region’s highest accolade in film.

The Turning has been nominated in the leading category Best Feature Film, Mystery Road actor Aaron Pedersen is nominated for Best Performance by an Actor for his first feature film lead and internationally acclaimed cinematographer Mandy Walker ASC ACS is nominated for Achievement in Cinematography for Tracks, the first Australian nomination in this category in APSAs history.

The nominations include a record number of films from more countries and areas than ever before, with 39 films from 21 Asia Pacific countries and areas nominated for the awards, many of which have Australian distribution confirmed.

The Awards, supported by Brisbane City Council and managed by economic development board Brisbane Marketing in a unique collaboration with Paris-based UNESCO and FIAPF-International Federation of Film Producers Associations, recognise and promote cinematic excellence and cultural diversity of the world’s fastest growing film region: comprising 70 countries and areas, 4.5 billion people, and responsible for half of the world’s film output.

The Turning, an adaptation of the novel by iconic West Australian author Tim Winton produced by Robert Connolly and Maggie Miles, will compete alongside Oscar® winner Asghar Farhadi’s The Past, Japanese auteur Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Cannes Jury Prize winner Like Father, Like Son, Cannes Un Certain Regard Grand Jury Prize winner Omar (Palestine), Bangladesh’s submission for the 86th Academy Awards® Television, and Sri Lankan auteur Prasanna Vithanage’s With You, Without You.

Producer Robert Connolly said of the nomination: “‘On behalf of our seventeen directors, the many producers and creative teams involved, I have to say how rewarding it has been to see The Turning embraced by Australians in its release. I think I speak for our entire team when I say that it is truly humbling to now also be nominated for the leading film award in the entire Asia Pacific region.’

Tracks, directed by John Curran, starring Mia Wasikowska and produced by Oscar® winning producers Emile Sherman and Iain Canning, is the inspirational true story of Robyn Davidson’s 2700km solo trek through the remote Australian desert to the Indian Ocean, aided only by her loyal dog Diggity, four unpredictable camels and, at intervals, charismatic National Geographic photographer Rick Smolan.

Tracks cinematographer Mandy Walker – already the winner of a Satellite Award, the Hollywood Film Award for Cinematographer of the Year (Australia), an ACS Award of Distinction (Lantana) and nominated for an Independent Spirit Award (Shattered Glass) – said of the nomination: “To be able to shoot Tracks in the varied and beautiful landscape of the Australian desert was truly a fantastic experience. We wanted to do justice to Robyn’s story and the experience of her journey. I was also grateful to be working with such a dedicated cast and crew. It is such an honour to be recognised with this nomination.”

Also competing for the Achievement in Cinematography award are cinematographers Ehab Assal (Omar, Palestine), Murat Aliyev (The Old Man, Kazakhstan), Lu Yue (Back to 1942, People’s Republic of China) and Rajeev Ravi (Monsoon Shootout, India, UK, Netherlands).

In Mystery Road Aaron Pedersen plays an Indigenous detective who returns to his outback home to solve a brutal crime, with a performance The Hollywood Reporter called “superb”.

In the Best Performance by an Actor category, Aaron Pedersen is competing against Korean superstar Lee Byung-hun for Masquerade (Republic of Korea), actor veteran Tatsuya Nakadai – who has appeared in more than 100 films over the last 59 years – for Japan’s Tragedy (Japan), and two other actors nominated for their first feature film leads, Yerbolat Toguzakov (The Old Man, Kazakhstan) and Adam Bakri for Omar (Palestine).

Best known for his recent roles in The Circuit, City Homicide and the Jack Irish telemovies, Aaron Pedersen said of his nomination: “The APSA nomination belongs to the film and the filmmaking family who helped dream this story to life. Internationally it acknowledges the spirit of Indigenous storytelling which is at the very heart of Mystery Road.”

Australian Producers Anna McLeish and Sarah Shaw of Warp Films, who produced Snowtown, are nominated for their film Shopping (New Zealand), in the category of Best Children’s Feature Film.

Australian actor Peter O’Brien stars in the lead role of Kasper Almayer for Malaysian feature Almayer’s Folly (Hanyut), nominated for Best Screenplay for the film’s writer/director U-Wei Bin Hajisaari.

The 2013 Asia Pacific Screen Awards ceremony will be held in Brisbane’s historic City Hall on Thursday 12 December at a glittering event, with nominees and industry luminaries in attendance.

Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said of the nominations: “It is my absolute pleasure to see the 2013 nominations encompass more Asia Pacific countries and areas than ever before, making this year the most international event in APSAs proud history. We look forward to once again hosting this internationally renowned event in Brisbane.’

 

APSA Chairman Michael Hawkins said: “To be inviting such a prestigious and talented group of filmmakers to Brisbane for APSA in its seventh year is yet another fine achievement for the awards. To see among the nominees first time feature filmmakers who are competing with some of the most established and renowned filmmakers in the region, and indeed the world, means the International Jury has a hard task ahead of them.”

 

Now in his seventh year as Chair of the International Nominations Council, Professor Hong-Joon Kim said of the 2013 nominations: “I am extremely impressed by the overall quality and scope of the films from the Asia Pacific region that were in the running for this year’s awards. I believe this year will prove to be the highest level of competition for APSA since its inauguration in 2007.’

 

Nominees automatically become members of the APSA Academy, led by Academy President Jack Thompson AM PhD. The APSA Academy is a growing body of the region’s most influential names in film including past APSA Nominees, International Jury and Nominations Council members.

Winners in the feature film categories will be determined by the 2013 APSA International Jury, headed by esteemed Indian screenwriter and director Shyam Benegal, who will lead a group of accomplished Jury members including Korean screenwriter and director Kim Tae-yong, “Queen of Sri Lankan Cinema” actress of stage and screen Hon Dr Malani Fonseka, Turkish actor Tamer Levent, Swiss director Christoph Schaub and Hong Kong producer Albert Lee.

The International Jury can also, at its discretion, present a further prize; the Jury Grand Prize, for which nominated narrative feature films are eligible.

Two additional major awards for outstanding achievement will be presented at the ceremony; The UNESCO Award for outstanding contribution to the promotion and preservation of cultural diversity through film and the FIAPF Award for Outstanding Achievement in Film which celebrates a film practitioner from the region whose career and actions contribute strongly to the development of the film industry.

The APSA NETPAC Development Prize of US$10,000 will also be awarded to a first or second time feature filmmaker. This emerging talent prize is supported by APSA and the Griffith Film School, Griffith University.

The Turning is currently in release through Madman films with an innovative special event release strategy and has recently surpassed $1million at the Australian Box Office. Mystery Road is currently in independent release through Dark Matter, and Tracks will be released on March 6, 2013 through Transmission Films. Shopping will be released via Madman.

 

In 2013, an unprecedented number of nominated international films already have Australian distributors including Wong Kar Wai’s The Grandmaster (Roadshow Films), Like Father, Like Son (Rialto Entertainment), My Sweet Pepperland (Sharmill Films), and films already released in Australia – Back To 1942 (China Lion Entertainment) and Saudi Arabian feature Wadjda, which was released by Hopscotch Films earlier this year.

 

Madman Entertainment films have received nominations in every category and are confirmed to release Singapore’s Ilo, Ilo, Asghar Farhadi’s The Past, Palestine’s Omar, New Zealand box office hit White Lies, India’s The Lunchbox produced by APSA 2012 Jury Grand Prize winner Anurag Kashyap, Hayao Miyazaki’s final film The Wind Rises and documentaries The Gatekeepers and The Act Of Killing, both currently in release.
