Since its arrival on the stages of Boston’s heavy scene in 2006 Revocation have become a band who have used their unique blend of thrash and death metal to repeatedly change the sound of the genre. That time period has seen them deliver seven studio albums including the Lovecraft inspired The Outer Ones which gained the band worldwide attention.

Now as the band travels to Australia to tour with the mighty Cattle Decapitation we were lucky enough to get the opportunity to sit down and reflect on the band’s career to date with frontman David Davidson.

“It was awesome we played with so many different bands in the metal realm and in the punk scene,” says Davidson talking about Revocation’s early days in the Boston live scene. “We would be doing club shows and small bars, then we worked our way up to the bigger clubs, places like Great Scot and Middle East. That was a cool kind of stepping stone for us because we were like ‘oh wow we are playing at a 200 capped room rather than a 50 capped room.’ Playing at a 200 capped room was a really big deal, but then we were also playing basement shows at these random warehouse shows with punk rock bands and there were random house parties and stuff.”

“It was really cool to be part of that scene because all my friends were part of the music scene in all different ways,” he says continuing. “That made it cool because any given weekend we were all bouncing around at different shows right across the Boston scene.”

At that time Davidson and the band made the decision to change their name from Cryptic Warning to Revocation and even then the band thought that something special was going to happen. “I think it was always the goal,” says Davidson as we talk about whether or not the band ever thought they would reach the point where they were touring the world. “I’m not sure we ever thought it would come into fruition or not because it was hard to tell back them. But I always thought possibly if we remained focussed and I knew there was something special to the music, so I just figured that if I kept grinding it out, kept going, kept honing my craft then eventually people would notice, and yes it has become a career for me.”

The band have had many highlights over the years including touring with the likes of Cannibal Corpse. Their albums now regularly chart with their Deathless and Great Is Our Sin albums both hitting the Top Ten on the US Hard Rock charts. Then came the praise for their last album – The Outer Ones. Those moments certainly aren’t lost on Davidson and the rest of the band.

“When we first started out it was hard to see the trajectory that the band was going to take,” he explains. “We were just writing music for ourselves and to some extent that is what I still do, I have to let the music speak to me first and foremost before I think how it will affect anybody else. We’re not a band that thinks about writing for a particular fan base or anything like that it is really about satisfying this creative drive that we have and to me that is important because then I know that it comes from an honest place.”

“With The Outer Ones it was really just us embracing the death metal aesthetic that has been part of our band since day one but really just turning up the dial on it and really going head on into that death metal realm,” he tells me as we continue to talk about just how well received the tracks have been off the album.

That leads me to ask him how the tracks have been going live and what they have planned for their Australian shows. “The response to the music whether it is on the record or live has been really phenomenal,” he says. “We can’t wait to get to play them Australia so the Australian crowds can witness them, the material is obviously very aggressive because it is super heavy, but we’ll have some twists and turns in there and a few surprises thrown in as well. I think it is going to be a blast playing these tracks for the Australian crowds.”

“It is impossible to play everything,” Davidson continues as we discuss the amazing back catalogue that the band has to chose from these days. “What we do with each new release is primarily focus on the new material. I like that playbook rather than when bands just rehash song from a long time ago. I love it when they explore the new material and we are very passionate about the new material. Whenever we do a new record I think because it is so fresh to us we want to play it so we’ve been leaning pretty heavy on the new material to keep it fresh for us and to keep it fresh for the fans. We’ll also throw in a couple of crowd pleasers here and there so they can expect some new stuff with some crowd pleasers thrown in for good measure.”

The more you listen to Revocation the more you realise that this is band that certainly deserves more respect than they seem to get. With some amazing albums already in their back pocket and this tour with Cattle Decapitation about to hit our shores it seems like now is the right time to discover Revocation if you aren’t already a fan.



I almost feel that I need to preface this article before I continue. I am not some kind of music snob, nor am I somebody that believes that hard rock or metal is the only kind of music worth listening to. A quick look at my album collection and yes you will find things as extreme as Cannibal Corpse and you will find things as commercial as Green Day or Bon Jovi. Likewise when you come to genres nestled snugly away with albums by KISS and Metallica you’ll also find music from ABBA, Eminem right through to pop by Kylie Minogue and Pet Shop Boys. My Dad instilled one message into me when he started me on my musical journey and that was “There is good music in every genre, you just need to find it.”

So why the need for such a preface? Well basically because while I’m angry about some of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall Of Fame snubs I may say some things that might put some readers on the defensive about the kind of music that they listen to. It is a divisive topic so know now that I mean no offence.

Over the past twenty-four hours social media has blown up about this year’s Hall Of Fame inductees. Somehow the Dave Matthews Band managed to win the popular vote with millions of votes from the public but never actually made the final cut while the likes of Judas Priest, Soundgarden, Motorhead and Thin Lizzy were all given a royal snubbing. In fact the entire public voting system was treated as a joke this year with four out of the Top Five voted artists all missing out on actually being inducted.

When you consider that Judas Priest, Soundgarden, Motorhead and Thin Lizzy now join a list that includes the likes of Pat Benatar, Jane’s Addiction, New York Dolls, War, Rage Against The Machine, Todd Rundgren, Steve Winwood and Sting who have all been nominated but missed out on induction you begin to realise that the list of those who have missed out is almost as impressive as those who have made it.

Those artists not being in the Hall Of Fame while the likes of The Notorious B.I.G., Madonna and Whitney Houston are seems a little bit strange. After all this is supposed to be a rock ‘n’ roll Hall Of Fame while to me those artists firmly fall on the hip-hop, R&B and pop side of things. No disrespect meant to those artists but surely genre has to weigh into the decision at some point.

There is little doubt that the biggest travesty though has to be some of the bands that missed out this year. If Judas Priest, Motorhead and Thin Lizzy don’t deserve to be in the Hall Of Fame then who does? Those bands are not just some of the greatest and influential to ever exist in the rock world, they also changed the world of music forever. Let’s take a look at each band on their merits.

There is little doubt that Judas Priest are one of the greats. Since their inception in 1969 the Brits have sold over fifty million albums worldwide and, as Wacken found out a couple of years ago, are still as strong today as ever. The Grammy award winning Brits are currently completing their nineteenth studio album. Who knows maybe it takes twenty albums to land in a spot in the Hall Of Fame.

Then comes fellow Brits Motorhead. Lead by the legendary Lemmy Motorhead are considered the forefathers of British heavy metal. If there was ever a time for Motorhead to be inducted into the Hall Of Fame it is now – the band officially disbanded in 2015 after the tragic death of Lemmy. That same year saw the death of original drummer Phil Taylor while Eddie Clarke passed away in 2018 and Larry Wallis in 2019. With all founding members of Motorhead now sadly passed away this was the right time for them to rightfully find their way into the Hall Of Fame.

Last, but not least, comes Irish rockers Thin Lizzy. To many they are the band that penned the classic The Boys Are Back In Town but Thin Lizzy’s history goes a lot deeper than that.  Bands such as Alice In Chains, Mastodon and Metallica have all declared that Thin Lizzy were a huge influence on them and their sound. The band also recorded twelve albums and have promised music fans that they are looking to re-form for some gigs in the future.

It might sound harsh but is it time to take another look at how artists are selected for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall Of Fame? The clear observations to come out of this year’s inductions are that it seems like the public vote counts for nothing and that artists who haven’t quite bided their time or fit the rock genre have somehow been inducted ahead of some of the true legends of the genre. The system seems broken and needs to be fixed as these snubs seem to as disrespectful as they unfair.

Maybe it makes me a little bit different to most heavy music fans but I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for electronic music as well. Yes for every Cannibal Corpse and Nightwish album in my collection there is also an Underworld or Orbital album not far away. It is probably one of the reasons why I have embraced the more unusual and unique sounding bands out there rather than not being willing to give them a chance.

Now to my collection of very unique bands I add Germany’s Verderver a band whose sound caught me from the very beginning for a very strange reason. Flashback to the last ever Big Day Out and I found myself drifting away from the crowds and stumbling upon a tent that was pretty much deserted but coming out of it was some of the most amazing music I had ever heard – the music of The Algorithm. I instantly fell in love with it, so much so that they were my highlight of the day and I ended up checking them out when they returned to Australia a few years later.

So how does that relate to Verderver? Well as I sat down and started to listen to track one on their brand new album – Weltunter –  and ‘bang’ there was the heart and soul of The Algorithm, yes mixed in with the amazing old school death metal sound of Verderver is the electronic sounds of the great Remi Gallego… and from there I knew this was going to be a ride that I was going to enjoy.

As you listen to that first track ‘Vakuum’ you can hear the that old school death metal sound work in unison with the electronic influence but somehow it also feels like a battle with two armies going to war against each other – it is the sound of pain, anguish and aggression all mixed together in a way that you have simply never heard it before.

Yes every track on Weltunter feels like it has its own emotions. The wailing guitars breaking through the electronic on ‘Gebrauchswert’ sound like a siren warning of an onslaught… then the onslaught arrives with brutal drums and vocals.

In fact vocally Weltunter is perfect. The near strangled sound of them on ‘Apathe’ are a highlight while the manic vocals of Nikita Kamprad of Der Weg einer Freiheit have you returning to ‘Nadir’ over and over again.

As an album Weltunter feels like it showcases both beauty and aggression. ‘Karteileichie’ has some truly beautiful instrumental parts while the atmospheric vocal layering of ‘Artfremid’ is breathtaking. Then there is the aggression – ‘Nichtgestalt’ and ‘Kammerflimmerin’ are just sheer brutality while ‘Widersinn’ is some good old school death metal.

Weltunter is one of those albums that you listen to and then can’t wait to tell your friends about. This is an utter modern metal masterpiece and I pray that very soon Verderver hit our shores for a tour.
