Lygon Street Si parla Italiano

Summary: After the disaster of World War II, a wave of Italian immigrants found their way to Melbourne – a strange place, suspicious of outsiders and completely devoid of a good cup of espresso. Congregating in a then run-down stretch of Carlton known as Lygon Street, these irrepressible restaurateurs, entrepreneurs and sometime mafiosi would come to define not only a street, but an entire city.

Documentarians Shannon Swan and Angelo Pricolo tell the history of this famous cultural epicentre, combining archival footage, one-on-one interviews and a roundtable of Lygon Street’s most prominent figures,  bringing to life the people, places and, of course, pastas that have made up one of Melbourne’s most remarkable communities.

Cynic Artwork

Legendary progressive rock innovators CYNIC (guitarist/vocalist Paul Masvidal, drummer Sean Reinert, bassist Sean Malone) have revealed the cover art, title and release date of their new album. The highly-anticipated new record is entitled ‘Kindly Bent to Free Us’ and was produced by CYNIC at L.A.’s Perfect Sound Studios.

The album was engineered by Jason Donaghy (BAND OF HORSES, FEIST, ROB ZOMBIE, RYAN ADAMS), mixed by R. Walt Vincent (PETE YORN, LIZ PHAIR, TOMMY KEENE) and mastered by Maor Appelbaum (FATES WARNING, SEPULTURA, CATHEDRAL, INQUISITION, HALFORD).

The artwork for ‘Kindly Bent to Free Us’ has been created by long-time and sadly late CYNIC artist Robert Venosa (R.I.P.)

‘Kindly Bent to Free Us’ will be released on February 14th. The album will be available as a CD Digipak, a limited edition collector’s box, limited edition double LP, and digitally.

About the new material, drummer Sean Reinert said: “It’s a bold new sound for CYNIC and marks a gigantic leap in the band’s progression. We’ve had a lot of time to let this material develop and gestate, and it finally feels ready to be unleashed on the world. I’ve been in trio mode with Malone and Masvidal flushing out a zillion and one details, and couldn’t be happier about what’s happening with these songs. They are truly alive!”

Joshua James

Having recently announced his signing with Cooking Vinyl Australia, Nebraska-born, Utah-based rock’n’folk singer JOSHUA JAMES is coming to Australia for the very first time, playing support on all eight shows of NEIL FINN‘s Dizzying Heights Album Tour in March 2014.
There has been a lot said about Joshua James, many accolades have been placed upon his head but never before have Australian music fans been privy to a direct release or an appearance in our territory. His latest album – From The Top of Willamette Mountain – is released this Friday, November 15 and is a precursor for what will undobutedly be a serious exercise in momentum here in Australia. The album will be released as an introductory deluxe package before a brand new album next year and is preceded by the remarkable first single ‘Queen of the City’.
Strangely familiar while refreshingly innovative, James’ songs reflect a distinct American ache, while his sweetly hoarse vocal appears tremulously fragile one moment, soulfully-fuelled by a grunge rock drive the next. From The Top of Willamette Mountain has already been met with widespread critical acclaim largely due to James’ arsenal of relentlessly impressive songs, songs that don’t necessarily labour over the flawless take, but rather focusses on the honesty while escaping the traditional confines of the folk genre.
The album’s first single – ‘Queen of the City’ – came out of a late night, whisky-induced haze, depicting the internal paradox of good and evil, the id and the ego, faith and doubt.
From The Top of Willamette Mountain released on Friday, November 15 via Cooking Vinyl Australia
