2013 German Film Festival: Polluting Paradise
In an exciting development, the Audi Festival of German Films and screening partner, Palace Cinemas, have confirmed that they will be holding special ‘one-off’ sessions of Fatih Akin’s acclaimed documentary, Polluting Paradise, in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra, Adelaide, Perth & Byron Bay.
Screening courtesy of Sharmill Films, Polluting Paradise is the latest work from renowned Turkish-German filmmaker, Fatih Akin, whose previous movies, Head On, Edge of Heaven and Soul Kitchen garnered much international acclaim.
A heartfelt project, Polluting Paradise is set in Turkey’s Black Sea village of Çamburnu, the home of Akin’s grandparents, who, along with their neighbours, are devastated when the government builds a garbage landfill directly above their village. Over a period of more than 5 years, Akin documents the small village’s struggle against the country’s powerful institutions and records the inevitable disasters that consistently plague this former paradise.
Polluting Paradise is a remarkable portrait of a Turkish community far removed from the major urban centres and a poignant plea for courage, which will screen at the Festival as follows:
