Beyond The Hills (2013)
Summary: Inspired by true events, this slow-burn drama received critical acclaim at this year’s Cannes film festival, earning an award for Best Screenplay and two for Best Actress.
Palme d’Or winning writer-director Cristian Mungiu (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days) returns with a charged and unsettling tale set in a remote orthodox monastery in the Romanian countryside. Based on two non-fiction novels by Tatiana Niculescu Bran about a modern case of exorcism, this drama tackles the big issues – love, faith, friendship and sacrifice.
Forced to leave the orphanage they grew up in, 18-year-old girls Voichita and Alina head onwards to very different lives: Alina to Germany for work, and Voichita into a monastery. When Alina returns to reunite with her friend, she discovers Voichita has found faith, and that God is the hardest lover of all.
