Edge Of Tomorrow First Look Reaction

Edge of Tomorrow

Okay I’ll preface this by saying that I am a huge Tom Cruise fan so I was a tad excited when I learned that I was going to have the opportunity to view some of the footage from his latest film Edge Of Tomorrow at a special presentation. So what is my first reaction the footage… well all I can really say is WOW!!!

I was very impressed with Cruise’s last film Oblivion and thought that it was one of the most underrated films of 2013 and from what we saw at the Edge of Tomorrow presentation this looks like it might even take another step forward and really cement Cruise as one of the finest science-fiction actors going around.

From what we saw it looks like Edge Of Tomorrow looks like a cross between a film like Starship Troopers and Groundhog Day. The respected Lt. Col Bill Cage (Tom Cruise) wakes up one day with no memory of what has just happened and suddenly discovers himself back a foot soldier who is about to be dropped onto a beach as part of a losing battle against the latest alien robots that have attacked Earth. When he lands he meets the tough Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt) and subsequently they both die and he finds himself once again waking up that morning… there is certainly something that he isn’t expecting going on.

So what did we learn from the presentation. Firstly the battle scenes looked completely out of this world. The aliens may look like something out of Transformers but the battle sequence itself looked like something out of Saving Private Ryan, certainly it seems that Doug Liman (who has handled action and sci-fi before with Jumper and The Bourne Identity) has a handle on those scenes, so you can only guess how good the scenes will look when the film has to reach a climax. To be brutally honest what we saw made me want to see more… I can’t wait until the film hits the screens in its entirety.

As usual it looked like Cruise just breezes through his role… not that there is anything wrong with it. He has this unique acting style where he seems to totally believe that he is the character that he is playing, and he seems to once again play that card here. He believes that he is a soldier fighting alien robots and soon he convinces the audience of that as well. Some may also wonder about Emily Blunt playing a hard-edged soldier but from what we saw at the presentation she seemed to handle the role well.

The presentation left me very excited about Edge of Tomorrow. It looks like one of those science fiction films that has grit, a deeper storyline and some spectacular visuals. I’ll call it early but I wouldn’t be surprised if this doesn’t turn out to be one of my favourite films of the year.
