OUR NIGHTMARE ALLEY REVIEWS

David Griffiths’ Nightmare Alley Review:

I am probably committing a sin against cinema by admitting this but I have never really been someone that has fallen for the whole ‘del Toro is one of the greats film directing’ claim. Sure he has made a couple of films that I have enjoyed but I stand by my claim that The Shape Of Water is one of the most over-rated films to ever hit cinemas and I will never really forgive him for making me endure Pacific Rim.

But something sparked inside of me when I saw the trailer for Nightmare Alley. There was something about this film that seemed appealing to my inner film geek. It looked dark, it looked slightly Gothic in theme and it seemed to remind me of one of my favourite TV shows – Carnivale. I was more than willing to take a look at the film off the back of what had teased me and I am so glad that I did.

Nightmare Alley centres around Stanton Carlisle (Bradley Cooper – A Star Is Born) a man who is left homeless and jobless after deciding to run from his past. His journey soon brings him to a carnival run by Bruno (Ron Pearlman – Hellboy), where he lands a job through Odditorium owner Clem Hoatley (Willem Dafoe – Spiderman) who quickly teaches him the secrets of the trade.

But it is the ‘grifting’ work of Zeena the Seer (Toni Collette – Muriel’s Wedding) and her husband Pete (David Strathairn – Godzilla) that captures Stanton’s attention and soon he begins to learn everything he needs to become a ‘psychic’ himself. At the same time Stanton becomes infatuated with the ‘electric woman’, Molly Cahill (Rooney Mara – The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo), and finds himself drawn into a new game thanks to psychiatrist Dr. Lilith Ritter (Cate Blanchett – Blue Jasmine).

My first thought when watching Nightmare Alley was the feeling of how epic it was. Not epic in the sense of a film like Lord Of The Rings but epic in its scale of storytelling. This is based on a novel from 1946 and you can feel that nostalgia rush through your body as del Toro creates a film that really is only comparable to Scorcese’s Shutter Island. No matter how much you enjoy this film there is something dark and sinister that bubbles along just under the surface the whole time you watch this film.

This is a film that tests your morals. The treatment of the ‘geek’ by Clem is horrendous and the fact that the rest of the carnival staff know about it means there is not really a redeemable one among the lot. Then there is the film’s hero, Stanton Carlisle, a man whom the audience is shown the dark sins of in the opening of the film and a man that you know will screw anyone over to live another day yet somehow del Toro presents him in the film in such a way that you find yourself siding with him. It is quite sick when you think about it but it also shows me that del Toro has learnt so much about good screenwriting over the years that he is now a pro who can easily control his audience like a puppet in a pretty remarkable way.

Del Toro and his cinematographer, Dan Lausten (The Shape Of Water), give this film the dark, foreboding look and feel that it deserves and needs. There is never a moment during the film when the audience gets a chance to relax, like the characters in the film they are kept on their toes as they never know what is around the corner when it comes to the plot or who is going to be played next. If having your emotions heightened during a film is your thing then this is certainly the film for you.

What I also found impressive with this film was the performances. Bradley Cooper is in career best form and he gets to play the anti-hero Stanton and his scenes alongside Cate Blanchett are some of the best ‘theatre’ that you are ever likely to see. The dialogue between the two is like cat and mouse and their scenes together are some of the cinematic highlights of 2022. Dafoe is also at his sinister best while Rooney plays the vulnerable Molly well and is never over-shadowed by the bigger names around her.

I never really thought that I would say this but del Toro has delivered a real masterpiece here. The film takes its audience down a haunted rabbit burrow that they are not likely to forget for a long time. The film is kind of left wanting during a dry middle act but it is bookended by some of the best cinema that you will see in 2022.

David Griffiths’ Don’t Look Up Review:

The last couple of years have been a crazy time. While many have just tried to live their lives despite the pandemic restrictions placed on them, we have also seen some truly crazy moments when it has come to world politics, people doubting scientists and of course developing their own conspiracy theories.

Now gifted filmmaker Adam McKay (The Big Short) takes all of the events of the past two years and brings them to life in a hilarious way with his new Netflix released comedy Don’t Look Up. The great news is the film works and is one of the funniest films to be released in a long time.

The film begins with a gifted young scientist, Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence – The Hunger Games), discovering a brand new asteroid. But after her boss and mentor, Dr Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio – Titanici), does the maths to work out its trajectory they realise that it is heading for Earth – an event that would be catastrophic.

The pair do the right thing and soon find themselves working with NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office head Dr. Teddy Oglethorpe (Rob Morgan – Stranger Things) but when they take the news to the President of The USA (Meryl Streep – The Devil Wears Prada) and her Chief-Of-Staff (and son), Jason (Jonah Hill – The Wolf Of Wall Street), they are surprised to find the pair don’t want to know about it and are not prepared to take action on it.

When it is suggested to Kate and Randall that they leak the news to the media they decide to do so on a morning news TV show but once again the hosts, Jack Bremmer (Tyler Perry – Gone Girl) and Brie Evantree (Cate Blanchett – Elizabeth), treat the news like a joke and soon Randall and Kate realise they are going to have to try and convince the world of the danger themselves.

It is an interesting experience watching Don’t Look Up. On the one hand you find yourself laughing out loud repeatedly throughout, but the other hand you realise the sad nature of the world that we live in has been perfectly captured by McKay as the story at hand plays out through to the end.

McKay’s screenwriting here is nothing less than sensational. The story itself plays out with true suspense and emotion while the comedy of the film also shines through with some truly memorable moments. This film is true comedy gold, but at the same time McKay finds ways to easily disguise his characters so we know who he is referring to without him having spell it out. It is very easy to see that McKay’s President, brilliantly played by Meryl Streep, is a direct swipe at who President Trump handled the Covid pandemic without him having to spell it out for his audience.

McKay’s cast also embraces the brilliant screenplay and it enhances their performances. DiCaprio is amazing as Randall Mindy and he seems to embrace the opportunity to bring some comedy to his performance. He is a true acting de force throughout the film and brings it all together with one of the most emotional cinematic scenes since the finale of Melancholia.

Likewise Jennifer Lawrence shines throughout the film, delivering true moments of drama as she sensationally portrays a scientist that nobody will listen to. The stars of the film are well-supported by Cate Blanchett who seems to enjoy the opportunity to play a ditzy, over-friendly talk-show host while Meryl Streep is also a stand-out as an uncaring President.

Don’t Look Up is a well rounded comedy that sees McKay bounce back from some of the duds he has delivered from other the years. It probably won’t be but so well written is this screenplay that it deserves to be mentioned during the awards season. That aside though this is a fantastic film that captures the past couple of years like no other.

The tide has turned and it’s a whole new “Ocean’s” when eight women plan and execute a heist in New York. Oscar winner Sandra Bullock stars in the title role, alongside Oscar winners Cate Blanchett and Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, with Rihanna and Oscar nominee Helena Bonham Carter. Oscar-nominated filmmaker Gary Ross is directing.

Ross directs from a screenplay he wrote with Olivia Milch (upcoming “Dude”), with Steven Soderbergh and Jon Kilik producing, Michael Tadross, Susan Ekins, Sandra Bullock, Diana Alvarez and Bruce Berman executive producing, and Milch co-producing. Filming is taking place in and around New York City.

Collaborating with Ross behind the scenes are director of photography Eigil Bryld (“In Bruges,” “Not Fade Away”), production designer Alex DiGerlando (“Beasts of the Southern Wild,” HBO’s “True Detective”), editor Juliette Welfling (“Free State of Jones,” “The Hunger Games”), costume designer Sarah Edwards (“Tower Heist,” Showtime’s “Billions”), and composer Nicholas Britell (“The Big Short,” “Free State of Jones”).

MIFF Premiere Fund

The State Government of Victoria has delivered a $900,000 renewal of the Melbourne International Film Festival MIFF Premiere Fund, which provides strategic minority co-financing to new Australian films that then go on to premiere at MIFF.

“The MIFF Premiere Fund’s continuation is important for MIFF, audiences, local filmmakers, and the State’s creative economy,” said MIFF Chair Claire Dobbin. “Generating a pipeline of world premieres for MIFF, and screenings for the MIFF Premiere Regional Showcase, the Premiere Fund helps MIFF remain the Southern Hemisphere’s leading film event.”

“Together with MIFF 37ºSouth Market & Accelerator, the MIFF Premiere Fund reinforces Melbourne’s position as a creative industries capital,” said MIFF Industry Director and Premiere Fund Executive Producer Mark Woods. “Securing finance for independent Australian films is always a challenge and the contribution of the Premiere Fund has helped close the financing gap on some 45 films. The Fund is also proud of its part in fostering diversity and equality with nearly 50% of the Premiere Fund titles having feature debut directors, 31% having female directors and 53% female producers, while 13% had indigenous elements, 29% CALD community elements and 9% LGBTI engagement.”

The MIFF Premiere Fund is one of a suite of MIFF Industry Programs, which also include MIFF 37ºSouth Market, Australia’s only festival-based movie financing market, and the MIFF Accelerator emerging director workshop.

With combined budgets of more than $100 million, the MIFF Premiere Fund’s 45 films include the likes of BRAN NUE DAE starring Geoffrey Rush, BALIBO starring Anthony LaPaglia, THE TURNING featuring Cate Blanchett, Rose Byrne and Hugo Weaving, feature documentaries ELECTRIC BOOGALOO and IN BOB WE TRUST and the recent hit children’s film PAPER PLANES, starring Sam Worthington and David Wenham, that grossed nearly $10 million at the local box office. Following their world premieres at MIFF, the MIFF Premiere Fund-supported films also tour regionally with the MIFF Premiere Regional Showcase and have been selected for numerous overseas festivals including Cannes, Berlin, Toronto and Sundance.

“It is imperative for the state of filmmaking in Victoria that both the MIFF Premiere Fund and MIFF 37ºSouth Market continue to thrive and so I am thrilled that the Government is renewing the MIFF Premiere Fund,” said Lizzette Atkins who produced Rock N Roll Nerd, The Triangle Wars, Aim High In Creation and the upcoming Looking for Grace (starring Richard Roxburgh and Radha Mitchell) with MIFF Premiere Fund assistance. “Speaking from experience, the MIFF Premiere Fund can play a critical role in a project reaching its final budget.”

“Finding financial support for films by new directors is increasingly difficult and the Government’s continuation of the MIFF Premiere Fund is very important for Victorian filmmakers,” said producer Philippa Campey who has produced Bastardy and Galore with MIFF Premiere Fund assistance. “I wholeheartedly support the continuation of this pivotal Fund which has become a fundamental part of our local sector and will be increasingly critical in the future with its support of quality, independent feature-length projects.”

“The wonderful thing about the MIFF Premiere Fund is it invigorates the 37ºSouth Market at MIFF and connects Victorian film-makers into the international film financing system opening up opportunities for networking and co-production that would otherwise not be there,” said producer John Moore who is producing the upcoming Putuparri & The Rainmakers with MIFF Premiere Fund support.
