1. Q. How did you come up with the idea for Wrath of Man?
A. The idea came to me over 10 years ago after watching the French movie Le Convoyeur, and then one day I decided to stop talking about it and go ahead and make it.
2. Q. Then what happened?
A. I wrote the script and called Jason Statham, who is my mate, and we ended up having a lovely time making it together.
3. Q. Your career as a filmmaker took off precisely with Jason Statham on Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch. And although you haven’t worked with Statham for quite a while, was it easy to fall back into the same dynamics you had with him years ago?
A. Oh yes, it was just like the old days. We are all a bit older now, and probably not any wiser, but it’s always fun to work with him.
4. Q. How similar is your movie to Le Convoyeur?
A. That film represents only about a quarter of what this one is, which is basically just the premise of how the guy finds out who the inside man is. In the original movie he was an ordinary man that had no skills, but here there is some irony involved in the investigation and a reason for whom he is and why he was where he was when the first robbery happened. And I think it’s fun.
5. Q. So, how would you explain the plot of Wrath of Man?
A. Well, it’s a revenge action movie with some interesting hooks in it that I like quite a lot. There are different layers that reveal themselves during the process of unpacking this particular narrative. So, the story twists and turns to the point where you realize that nothing is what it first presented itself to be. And precisely those twists and turns are what interest me the most about the story.
6. Q. It seems like it is one of your more dramatic films to date.
A. That is true. Actually, I am trying my hardest not to laugh or make it funny. I just hope it feels fresh to the audience, because that’s how it feels to me at the moment.
7. Q. The mysterious man working at a cash truck company known as H – the main character played by Jason Statham – reminds us a bit of those great 70’s antiheroes.
A. I agree, I think he has a 70’s tacit antihero feel to him; although I believe H has a bit more to say in this final incarnation of the script, now that we are more into it. And that’s because I like to pretty much let these characters come alive on the day, rather than overworking them before. Jason is definitely the right man for this job.
8. Q. How have you seen Jason Statham evolve as an actor over the years since you started working with him?
A. Well, as we can all see, Jason has star quality. People just love him and relate to him. Quite a lot of those lads from Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels have cracked on.
9. Q. But did you already see that star quality in him back then?
A. Yes, I did. Jason is structured like an old-fashioned leading man, and there are not a lot of those around.
10. Q. After making a movie of the size of Aladdin, you are now shooting Wrath of Man for a much lower budget. Do you enjoy working on all kinds of genres with different budgets?
A. I like trying different things and never want to feel I’m stuck in a genre. And the budget doesn’t affect me, because I always know what I am getting into. I like expensive and inexpensive movies, the same way I like foul-mouthed and family friendly movies. In the end what you want to have as a filmmaker is a broad experience of genres.
11. Q. But what movies or genres inspired you growing up?
A. I loved Spaghetti Westerns and all those Clint Eastwood movies. And I actually have his kid Scott in this film. He has a proper role as quite a naughty boy.
12. Q. Music plays an important role in your films. Should we expect another unique soundtrack for Wrath of Man?
A. Yes, I hope so. I am looking forward to doing something interesting with it.
13. Q. Your movies also have a cool look and style to them.
A. It’s hard for me to be objective about either what my style is or what is stylish. I can only put things in there that are esthetically pleasing, but I can say that every movie I make is one I would like to watch, although you are always nervous before a film comes out because you want to be able to make the next one.
14. Q. Are you more nervous while you are shooting the film or after you have made it?A. Always after I have made it because every movie has three components: the actual movie, the marketing and the day it is released, and I can only really control the first one.

After the year that we have had it is hard to believe that the brilliant Guy Ritchie film was a 2020 film – but it was it landed on January 1st. Ritchie at his pure best!!!
9. A WHITE, WHITE DAY
Brutal and unrelenting this drama simply reminded me why I love Scandinavian cinema so much.
Waves is simply one of those films that will stay with you a long time after you have watched the film. Brilliant acting and a film with a twist that you will never see coming.
7. UNDERGROUND INC: THE RISE AND FALL OF ALTERNATIVE ROCK
A brilliant documentary that not only celebrated the rise of alternative rock but also revealed the dark side of the music industry that forced a lot of bands to give up.
6. THE DRY
Harshly beautiful The Dry is the perfect crime thriller. Eric Bana is sensational and we are all reminded just how good Robert Connolly is as a filmmaker.
5. THE INVISIBLE MAN
Horror re-boots are not supposed to be this good, right? Somehow though Leigh Whannell managed to take an old concept and turn it into something so, so terrifying.
Beautiful yet brutal at the same time. This foreign language film about child soldiers is destined to become a cult classic.
3. THE COMEBACK TRAIL
It is rare for a comedy to ever get this high on my Best Of lists but The Comeback Trail was something special. Funny, an all-star cast that brought their A-Game and a look back at Hollywood’s past – what wasn’t there to like?
2. THE PEANUT BUTTER FALCON
Few films stuck with me in 2020 like The Peanut Butter Falcon. A touching story that also showed why Shia LaBeouf is never an actor that we should forget about.

The perfect coming-of-age film. This Aussie film came out of nowhere and reminded us all just how great a film can be with perfect casting and screenplay that is full of natural dialogue. An Aussie classic!

Nobody quite does gangster film the way Guy Ritchie does. Ritchie basically made the genre his own after re-inventing it with modern day classics like Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrells and Snatch. And while cinema goers have enjoyed Ritichie’s take on Sherlock Holmes and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. nothing he has done in recent years has ever captured that true magic of his early films… that was until now. Yes The Gentlemen sees Ritchie return to the gangster genre but also sees him return to form with his creativity and stunning scriptwriting.
The film centres around Mickey Pearson (Matthew McConaughey – Dallas Buyers Club) a gangster who has built a budding marijuana business across England. However when Mickey is shot in a bar a private investigator turned wannaba screenwriter named Fletcher (Hugh Grant – Love Actually) is employed by a newspaper to investigate the case. Not happy with his fee though Fletcher decides to cash-in and try to blackmail Mickey’s right-hand man Ray (Charlie Hunnam – Pacific Rim) with a meandering tale that also involves other crime figures like Dry Eye (Henry Golding – Last Christmas) and Coach (Colin Farrell – The Lobster).
The Gentlemen screams creativity from the get go. Ritchie doesn’t make the film an easy watch for the audience. The story doesn’t play in order instead the audience is fed bits and pieces of information from a myriad of sources and at times it is up to them to work out what his truth or lie. Of course Ritchie also throws in the odd red herring to try and put you off the scent and the result is a heightened sense of suspense as you are never really sure what is true, right down to character’s deaths, until it is spelled out for you in actual black and white.
In true Ritchie style the way the plot is presented is also a stroke of genius. Having Fletcher recount the story for Ray not only gives the filmmaker a way to show the different variations of the truth in a creative way but also allows Grant and Hunnam to have an amazing screen presence that both actors seem to embrace with two hands. Grant is truly sensational and despite a long career to date this is easily his best ever role. While the film is not a comedy Grant uses his comedic timing to further enhance the character of Fletcher and make him someone truly memorable. Nearly all of the scenes that the two actors share together feel like an intense theatre production and there is no sign of weak acting anywhere to be seen.
Of course with the all the theatrics and creativity that Ritchie shows with this film he could probably be excused if it were being used to cover up a weak storyline but that certainly isn’t the case here. The story is an absolute gem, made up of unique characters who seem out to only aid their business dealings while not really caring what they do or who they have to crush to get what they want. And while there seems to be a never-ending amount of characters being included in the story you never seem to lose track of who is who and more importantly who works with who.
Anyone planning on going to see The Gentlemen should be warned though that while we have entered into a time of political correctness Ritchie seems to ignore that with this film. The language is perhaps the most extreme we have seen in cinema for awhile (but it does fit with the storyline) and of course this wouldn’t be a Ritchie gangster film if there wasn’t a couple of very violent on-screen deaths as well.
We mentioned earlier the brilliant performances of Grant and Hunnam but really there are a number of other actors who deserve credit for their work as well. Once again Matthew McConaughey shows why he is one of the best character actors going around at the moment while the big surprise here might be the performance of Henry Golding who breaks the shackles of his normal nice-guy persona by playing the very untrustworthy Dry Eye. Then of course there is Hollywood’s forgotten man Colin Farrell who seems to be having a ball playing the slimy Coach.
As far as gangster films go there are none better than The Gentlemen. This is a true cinema tour de force that delivers a headbutt to the face of its audience. It leaves in shock, it leaves you in awe but beyond all else this is a film that you will want to watch over and over again. Guy Ritchie is a true magician of a filmmaker and with The Gentlemen he delivers some good old-fashioned creative magic.

Young actors everywhere have the right to be jealous of British hard-man Jason Statham. Film lovers know Statham as one of modern cinema’s leading action heroes, a man who can kick and punch his way through any number of bad guys. He is very much the modern day Bruce Willis or Van Damme.
Statham, however, wasn’t one of those actors who worked away in small roles and built his way up. In his early days, Statham was part of the British National Diving Team (he finished 12th in the World Championship in 1992). He was also a black market salesman before beginning a career as a fashion model.
It was Statham’s modelling career that first made award winning director Guy Ritchie sit up and take notice of him. Ritchie was so impressed with Statham’s work on a French Connection modelling project the he offered him the role of Bacon in his gangster film “Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels.” The film was a commercial and critical success and Statham received plenty of praise. So much, in fact, that Ritchie then cast him in his next film “Snatch” alongside Brad Pitt.
From there, Statham appeared in films like “Turn It Up,” “Ghost Of Mars,” “The One” and the remake of “Mean Machine” before earning the role that made him famous – that of action hero Frank Martin in “Transporter” – a role he also followed up in the successful “Transporter 2.” In between the two films he also got to star in other notable films including “The Italian Job,” (as part of a star studded cast) “Collateral” (with Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx) and the underrated “Cellular.” During that time he also voiced characters in the popular video games “Red Fraction” and “Call Of Duty.”
After roles in the under-performing “London,” “Revolver” and “Chaos,” Statham appeared in an uncredited role in “The Pink Panther” before the surprising success of “Crank,” a film that also warranted a sequel in 2009 with “Crank: High Voltage.”
After roles in the less than impressive films like “In The Name Of The King: A Dungeon Siege Tale” and “War,” Statham again found critical success with a role in the crime thriller “The Bank Job.” This was quickly followed by him doing what he does best and playing the action star in the remake of “Death Race” before once again playing Frank Martin for a third time in “Transporter 3.”
It was at this time that the world was left without a doubt that Jason Statham was now considered to be one of the world’s leading action heroes when Sylvester Stallone selected him to be one of the cast members of “The Expendables” – a film that saw all the greatest action heroes of now and the past pushed congregate together. Statham’s character of Lee Christmas also made the cut for “The Expendables 2” and it is strongly rumoured that he will also be in “The Expendables 3,” which is due in cinemas in 2014.
Along with roles in smaller films like “The Mechanic,” “Blitz,” “Killer Elite,” “Safe,” “Parker,” “Redemption” and “Homefront” Statham also found time to voice the character of Tybalt in the family film “Gnomeo & Juliet,” as well as join the cast of one of the hottest franchises going around when he appeared in “Fast & Furious 6.”
With another “Expendables” film and his main role in the forthcoming “Fast & Furious 7,” it seems that Jason Statham is here to stay.
