David Griffiths’ Thor: Love And Thunder Review:

So far this year we have seen Marvel Studios go on a huge film rollercoaster. While the execs at the studio are quick to point out that Spider-Man: No Way Home was a box office success, they seem to forget that Morbius and Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness never reached the heights that they should of. But whenever somebody asks if the Marvel bubble has burst the answer nearly always seems to be people want to see films about the original Avengers. Well now the time has come to test that theory because the latest Marvel sees the return of one of the originals – the mighty Thor.

Thor: Love And Thunder begins with Thor (Chris Hemsworth – Spiderhead) getting back in shape and fighting alongside some very well-known Guardians. But when he hears about the rise of Gorr The God Butcher (Christian Bale – The Dark Knight) he decides that this is the right time to return back to the now earthly New Asgard which in his absence has become a tourist attraction.

Upon his arrival though he finds Asgard under attack with Gorr doing what he can do to destroy Asgard and its Gods. Thor instantly takes up arms with Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson – Creed) and soon surprised to realise that there is another hero keeping Gorr at bay – his ex-girlfriend Jane (Natalie Portman – Black Swan) and she is wielding Thor’s very own hammer.

As the trio fight off Gorr he flees taking Asgard’s children with him – this soon results in the trio having to seek out the mighty Zeus (Russell Crowe – Gladiator) for help while Thor has to come to terms with the fact that Jane is in fact the new Thor.

If Marvel are hoping that Thor: Love And Thunder is going to be their next blockbuster success then they may have a nervous wait to see how it goes because the film itself is so up and down it is going to split audiences. Early on director and screenwriter Taika Waititi (JoJo Rabbit) infuses his style of comedy into the film and like it did in Thor: Ragnarok it at times falls flat and feels out of place with the subject matter at hand. But it feels that later on in the movie Waititi lets that fall away and the result is a fairly decent action film with some impressive battle sequences.

It does feel a shame though that Waititi persists with the comedy in the Thor films because the result sees the once powerful God from the first two Thor films reduced to a bumbling fool at times. It is so refreshing to see that we get a glimpse of the once Mighty Thor towards the end of Thor: Love & Thunder… let’s just hope that continues in the future.

There are times throughout the film that works remarkably well. We have already mentioned some of the acting sequences but there is also a great deal of suspense to keep the audience engrossed in the movie as well. The inclusion of Gorr certainly helps with that – this is one time were we get to see the origins of the villain and once it is established just how brutal he is you get a strong feeling that not all of our Marvel heroes are going to make it out of this film alive. While Marvel has struggled with bringing memorable villains to the screen over the years they certainly shrug off that issue as Gorr will certainly stay with most people for a long time after the films ends.

Some of that credit must be paid to Christian Bale who seems to forget that he is in a comic book movie and delivers a near award winning performance. His strong performance seems to life those around him and once he shrugs off the comedic elements Chris Hemsworth seems to raise his acting stakes to match those of Bale.

Natalie Portman is also a refreshing change for the Marvel franchise with the emergence of Jane as the new Thor and Portman seems to grasp her action sequences amazingly well. She is well supported by the often over-looked Tessa Thompson whose performance as Valkyrie here is so good that it leaves the audience wondering whether or not this is the right time for Valkyrie to have her own stand-alone film. Sadly the same can’t be said for Crowe’s performance as Zeus, the usually brilliant actor will leave audience members scratching their heads at what kind of accent he is trying to pull off.

Thor: Love & Thunder is not one of Marvel’s finest hours but it is well worth a look. A must-have soundtrack of rock and metal mixed with one of the Marvel’s best villains to date makes up for the fact that at times the humour at hand seems out of place. Let’s hope in the future we see more of the Mighty Thor and less of the bumbling fool we’ve put up with for awhile now.

Summary: 

In a futuristic world Whit Carmichael (Daniel MacPherson) struggles to make a living as he and his wife, Lisa (Tess Haubrich) await the birth of their first child. Eager to make some more money Whit decides to join the elite squadrons who ‘slipstream’ throughout the universe. But as he nervously awaits his first slipstream all hell breaks out as the team before him returns from a deep space mining station with an alien infection. In a bid to escape the carnage Whit slipstreams to the outpost.

This means that another team on the opposite coast is then put together to rescue him. But with very little answers at their fingertips the rescue team which is made of people such as Claire Grenich (Grace Huang), Charlie Kent (Luke Hemsworth), Morgan Jacklar (Bren Foster), Chester Huntington (Luke Ford) and Harris Menzies (Harry Pavlidis) soon realise that something serious is about to greet them when they see that the very experienced and tough Rex Mannings (Dwaine Stevenson) is being sent with them. Even that though can not prepare them for the hell that they are about to embrace.

Amongst sci-fi fans Infini just has to be one of the most eagerly anticipated films of 2015. Anyone who saw director Shane Abbess’s debut film Gabriel knew one thing and that was this was a director with a gift. Gabriel is rightfully one of the best genre films ever made in Australia and it seems to have been a long wait to see what Abbess would do next and now it arrives in the form of Infini… a film that is worth the wait.

Viewers be warned though Infini is a film that is only going to be enjoyed by serious sci-fi fans, others could just be left by the way side scratching their heads. In a way Abbess has made Infini a dirty film. A film not only that has grime wherever you look on the screen but also a film that is going to mess with its audiences’ head in the same way the alien infection is messing with the characters at hand. Like them you are left wondering ‘what is real and what isn’t?’ and to the films credit it works.

Early on it feels like Infini is going to be your typical Doom computer game style movie with characters solving the problem at hand and then making it to the next ‘level.’ But it is there where Abbess turns the whole film on its head. He takes just about every Hollywood cliché and formula that you would expect in a sci-fi like this and then completely shatters them to the point where it is virtually impossible for the audience to predict what is going to happen next… and yes that is the way cinema is supposed to work, although the idea of making a film without sign posts seems like a foreign concept to most young filmmakers these days. Abbess also deserves credit for having the guts to kill characters whenever he pleases as well which only adds to the suspenseful nature of the film that is already enough to make your heart race throughout.

It is obvious that Abbess wanted to make Infini seem like a throwback to the genre flicks of the 1980s and 1990s and there are more than enough nods to classic films like Aliens to keep true fans of the genre happy. But the appealing part of Infini is that Abbess is also willing to try new and untried things. The almost schizophrenic scene between Whit and Chester is something that fans will remember for a long time after viewing this film while the ending is haunting and chilling enough to be one that you simply won’t forget.

One of the big surprises that many will have when viewing Infini will be the acting performance of Daniel MacPherson. Too many he is just the host of Dancing With The Stars, many have forgotten that over the years he has built up an impressive acting resume that consists of popular shows such as Neighbours, City Homicide and The Bill. Here MacPherson puts in a terrific performance that will have Hollywood noticing as he calmly mixes dramatic character acting with some full on action sequences. Yes believe or not MacPherson steps up to the plate as a buff action hero and one of the highlights of the film is his physical fight with Luke Ford… a fight that also shows that Abbess can more than handle himself as a director when his characters need to get physical as well. Ford also puts in a credible performance throughout the film and scenes between him and MacPherson really pack some acting muscle.

Infini is the kind of film that you need to watch when you can give it your 100 per cent attention. Blink or turn away from the screen for even a moment and you’ll miss something that is going to be important later on. Part action flick and part sci-fi that goes as deep as Prometheus this is a film that once again shows why Shane Abbess is one of the best genre filmmakers around. With a surprisingly great performance from leading man Daniel MacPherson and an ending that is truly rewarding this is one sci-fi flick that is worth watching over and over… and yes this time around I am begging for a sequel. Infini is a surprise hit, an intelligent sci-fi film that really packs a punch.

A trailer and scene from new Australian sci-fi has been released ahead of its release on May 8th.

Set in the dark reaches of space, INFINI is the story of an elite search and rescue team transported to a distant mining station to save Whit Carmichael (Daniel MacPherson) who is the lone survivor of a freak accident. Using Slipstream technology the team must transport into a hostile environment and quarantine a lethal biological weapon, which is set to arrive on Earth within the hour.

Filmmaker Shane Abbess is best known for his 2007 fantasy action debut, Gabriel, which is one of the most commercially successful independent Australian films of all time. The INFINI ensemble cast includes MacPherson, Grace Huang, Luke Hemsworth, Kevin Copeland, Dwaine Stevenson, Harry Pavlidis, Louisa Mignone, Tess Haubrich, Bren Foster and Luke Ford. Filmed and post-produced in New South Wales, the film is the first project from Storm Vision Entertainment, the joint venture label of Storm Alley Entertainment and Eclectik Vision media group.

INFINI premiered at 2015 Gold Coast Film Festival on April 12, with Abbess, producer Matthew Graham and co-writer/composer Brian Cachia joining MacPherson, Huang and Hemsworth in a Q&A following the screening. Select talent also joined Supanova Pop Culture Expo panels in Melbourne 11 April and Gold Coast 18 April. Internationally, INFINI enjoyed its World Premiere at Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival that same weekend, with other international film festival announcements to come.

There has been an influx of so-called crime thriller films over the past few years. A lot of screenwriters and directors have seen the success of television shows such as Law & Order and C.S.I. and decided that if that is the genre the public want at the moment then that is what they will give them. The problem has been though that many of those filmmakers have also decided to use the tired formula used by those television shows and that is certainly something that doesn’t work on the big screen.

That’s why The Reckoning is such a breath of fresh air. Director John V. Soto melds together the crime thriller genre with so good old fashioned suspense and a found footage storyline. Now I’m not normally a fan of found footage films, yes it worked for The Blair Witch Project but in my opinion has gone downhill from there, but here it works really well due to a tight script that delivers some great twists and turns along the way.

The film itself sees Detective Robbie Green (Jonathan LaPaglia) and his partner Detective Jane Lambert (Viva Bianca) handed a strange video tape that will help them piece together the mystery of the murder of their colleague Detective Jason Pearson (Luke Hemsworth).

The tape itself is a ‘documentary’ put together by two runaways Rachel (Hanna Mangan Lawrence) and AJ (Alex Williams) who are seemingly hunting down everybody responsible in the terminally ill Rachel’s sister’s death a few months earlier.

As a director Soto has always shown that he has a knack for good suspense. His films Crush and Needle showed that, but with The Reckoning he shows that he can pull away from those paranormal storylines but still bring that air of suspense to the crime thriller genre. There are moments of true suspense here – a rooftop fight with a girl who has nothing to lose and the film even contains a massive a twist that hits the audience right between the eyes when they least expect it.

Budgetary constraints do hold the film back a little but at the end of the day it is a good screenplay that makes a film work and that is the important thing here. Jonathan LaPaglia and Viva Bianca both seem to cruise through roles with ease and as a result they are overshadowed again by a brilliant performance by the young Hanna Mangan Lawrence who just seems to get better and better with every role she plays. Her performances in films such as Lucky Country, X, Acolytes and The Square have always been sensational and once again she comes to the fore here as a young girl who is dying but wants bloody revenge on those who took her sister away from her. It’s a challenging role but one she delivers with a punch.

The Reckoning is a must see for those that like their crime thrillers with a bit of edge. John V. Soto’s paranormal genre background shows in this film, his murders are a little edgier than you wouldn’t normally expect in a crime film while the found-footage storyline also brings something different to the table. Once again we see when it comes to crime films Aussie filmmakers are well and truly at the front of the pack.

Entertainment One Australia is proud to have three Australian films screening at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Rolf de Heer’s deeply affecting portrait of contemporary Aboriginal Australia CHARLIE’S COUNTRY, Kriv Stender’s darkly comedic thriller KILL ME THREE TIMES – which will also have its World Premiere at the festival – and Tony Ayres’ crime drama CUT SNAKE.

All three films will screen in TIFF’s Contemporary World Cinema section, which showcases films with compelling stories from global perspectives.

An Official Selection and awarded Best Actor in the Un Certain Regard section at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival this year, CHARLIE’S COUNTRY pairs renowned director Rolf de Heer with screen legend David Gulpilil for their third film collaboration following the multi-award winning Ten Canoes and their first feature The Tracker.

CHARLIE’S COUNTRY tells the story of blackfella Charlie (Gulpilil), who is getting older and is out of sorts. Frustrated with the failures of the government intervention and the ‘whitefella’ laws enforced in his remote community, Charlie takes off to live the old way. But in doing so he sets off a chain of events in his life that has him return to his community chastened, and somewhat the wiser.

In KILL ME THREE TIMES, Simon Pegg plays the mercurial assassin, Charlie Wolfe, who discovers he isn’t the only person trying to kill the siren of a sun drenched surfing town. Charlie quickly finds himself at the centre of three tales of murder, mayhem, blackmail and revenge. He finds honest work and becomes engaged to the beautiful Paula (Jessica De Gouw, These Final Hours). But when the charismatic and dangerous Pommie (Sullivan Stapleton) tracks him down, Sparra finds himself drawn back into a world that he had tried to leave behind.

Of CHARLIE’S COUNTRY, KILL ME THREE TIMES and CUT SNAKE screening at TIFF, Troy Lum, Managing Director of Entertainment One Australia, says, “We are very proud to have three incredible Australian films screening at Toronto. Kill Me Three Times Simon Pegg

Here is the first look image of Simon Pegg in Kriv Stenders’ new film ‘Kill Me Three Times’.

KILL ME THREE TIMES the new crime thriller from Kriv Stenders (Red Dog, Boxing Day). Principal photography began on the film in Western Australia on 16th September and concluded late last month. The film was shot in and around Perth and the southwest region of Western Australia. The film stars Simon Pegg, Sullivan Stapleton, Alice Braga, Teresa Palmer, Bryan Brown, Callan Mulvey and Luke Hemsworth. With an original screenplay by James McFarland, the film is produced by Laurence Malkin and Share Stallings (the team behind Death At A Funeral and A Few Best Men) and Tania Chambers, the former CEO of Screen New South Wales.
 
KILL ME THREE TIMES takes place in a sundrenched Australian surfing town, where a young singer, portrayed by Alice Braga, is the thread that binds three tales of murder, blackmail and revenge. Simon Pegg plays a mercurial assassin, who is hired by her wealthy husband (Callan Mulvey), but there is more than one person gunning for her. Sullivan Stapleton has been cast as a gambling addict that attempts to pay off his debts through a risky life insurance scam, whilst Teresa Palmer plays a small town Lady Macbeth who masterminds the scheme. Bryan Brown, a corrupt cop, also tries to get his cut and Luke Hemsworth portrays Braga’s love interest, a local surfer who hopes to rescue the young woman from Pegg’s telescopic sights.
Cargo Entertainment handles international sales and WME is repping KILL ME THREE TIMES in North America. The film is financed by Screen Australia, ScreenWest, Jake Film Finance, Media House Capital and the Melbourne International Film Festival’s MIFF Premiere Fund. Media House Capital’s Aaron L. Gilbert, Jake’s Joan Peters, Azurite Capital’s Jack Drewe, Jed Weintrob, Ian Gibbins, and Bryce Menzies are executive producers.
