Stan today released the official trailer for the brand new drama series American Gigolo, starring Jon Bernthal (We Own This City) in the titular role of Julian Kaye. A present-day reimagining of the iconic 1980 film, the eight-episode series will premiere 10 September, same day as the U.S. and only on Stan  with new episodes weekly.

American Gigolo follows Julian Kaye (Bernthal) after his wrongful conviction release from 15 years in prison as he navigates his complicated relationships with his former lover Michelle (Gretchen MolBoardwalk Empire), his troubled mother, and the people who betrayed him. While Julian struggles to reconcile the escort he was in the past and the man he is today,  Detective Sunday (Rosie O’Donnell,  The L Word®: Generation Q) seeks the truth about the murder that sent Julian to prison all those years ago, unearthing a much larger conspiracy along the way. 

Additional casting includes Lizzie Brocheré (Falling Water) as Isabelle, the heiress to a ring of sex workers; Gabriel LaBelle (Dead Shack) as Johnny, a younger version of Julian; Leland Orser (Ray Donovan) as Richard Stratton, a self-made tech billionaire; and guest star Wayne Brady (The Wayne Brady Show) as Julian’s best friend and mentor Lorenzo.  Alex Fernandez (Runaways), Sandrine Holt (House of Cards), Yolonda Ross (The Chi) and Melora Walters (Pen15) also guest star.

Nikki Toscano serves as series showrunner and executive producer for American GigoloJerry Bruckheimer, who produced the original film, will executive produce along with Jonathan LittmanKristieAnne Reed and Russell Rothberg.

OUR KING RICHARD REVIEWS

David Griffiths’ King Richard Review:

One of the reasons that sports biopics often fail is because it is often obvious that the filmmakers behind the film were so in love with their subject that the view that they present in the film is that the sports’ star is a hero that had no weaknesses or faults. Or if they do they are what drove them to success.

Brand new biopic King Richard doesn’t do that though. Here director, Reinaldo Marcus Green (Monsters & Men), tells the story of one of US sports most recognisable cult heroes – yet he is someone that never took the court himself. The second thing that Green does is that he puts the story out on the table and then allows the audience to make up their own mind about whether the person in question is a hero or villain.

The person at hand is Richard Williams (Will Smith Bad Boys) the father of tennis greats Venus (Saniyya Sidney – Fences) and Serena Williams (Demi Singleton – Goldie). The film chronicles on Richard had a plan for his daughters before they were even born but how he and his wife, Oracene Williams (Aunjanue Ellis – Ray), worked hard to teach their daughters all the ins and outs of tennis despite the obstacles the neighbourhood placed in their way.

Determined on his mission though Richard keeps working as hard as he can to see the goals achieved even if it at times means clashing with the girl’s early coaches, including Rick Macci (Jon Bernthal – The Walking Dead).

While it may not seem so to the average cinema goer Green overcomes a lot of obstacles to make this film work. Despite the fact that we all know where the Williams sisters end up with their careers Green and his screenwriter, Zach Baylin (Come As You Are), still make the film suspenseful as Richard first of all tries to help the girls escape their environment and catch the attention of the some of the world’s best coaches. That is no mean feat, but it is something that Green manages to do well throughout the film.

The second major obstacle that the film overcomes is that society has mixed opinions on Richard Williams. While some see him as a sporting hero who helped his daughters overcome massive odds other see him an overbearing parent who was working towards his own goals and dreams and used his daughters to get there. To Green’s credit this film shows both sides of that argument, in a really natural way, and lets the audience make up their own minds on whether they think Richard was in the right or the wrong.

Green also makes this film very accessible for those that may not know a thing about tennis. In a way this is not a sporting story but a story of a family determined to work hard to make a better life for themselves. A lot of the more touching moments throughout this film happen away from the court – whether it be scenes between Richard and Oracene or moments between father and daughter, all of these scenes work throughout the film without it ever becoming something cheesy that Hallmark would like.

The film itself also brings out the best in its actors. Saniyya Sidney and Demi Singleton are young stars on the rise while the seasoned actors here come to the fore. Will Smith plays the often unsure yet determined Richard Williams so well that he deserves to come into Awards contention. You literally forget that you are watching Will Smith in this film and there are times throughout this film where you swear by Smith’s facial expression that he is even trying to ‘think’ like Williams.

Also bringing his A-Game to the table here is Jon Bernthal who over the past few years has shown Hollywood just what a versatile actor he really is. It seems no matter what role Bernthal finds himself playing he falls into character with ease and here we see him rise to the occasion with many of more tense scenes playing out between himself and Will Smith. The result is cinematic gold.

King Richard is one of the most intriguing sports films that I have watched over the past few years. As director Green makes a well known story suspenseful and dramatic and Will Smith delivers one of the best performances of his career.

Kyle McGrath’s Baby Driver Review:

I’ve considered myself a huge fan of Edgar Wright’s films for some time. Since the release of Shaun of the Dead and with the continuation of his “Cornetto Trilogy” with Hot Fuzz & The World’s End Wright he has created what I would consider to be almost perfect films. In only a short amount of time Wright has created several instant cult classic films with their stylish presentation, music selection to characterisation and emotional moments having a kick to them even though the film itself may have an absurdist comedy twist to them. This isn’t to say I have impossibly high expectations for his movies simply that I know what Edgar Wright as a filmmaker is capable of.

Baby Driver is the story of “Baby” (Ansel Elgort) a young extremely talented getaway driver with a passion for music and a constant soundtrack to his own life playing on his iPod. Forced for years to serve as a wheelman to payback a debt to crime boss “Doc” (Kevin Spacey) Baby appears to be finally free to start building a life for himself after meeting a beautiful waitress named Deborah (Lily James). However much to Baby’s horror he is forced to take part in yet another “final job” with a team of psychopaths. Trying not to get in too deep Baby strive to stay ahead of the criminals and the cops and escape this life of crime once and for all before it’s too late.

By far the star of the film is not the actors but the music and how it is incorporated into the film. Wright has clearly put an extensive amount of effort into choreographing almost the entire film so that it synchs up with the accompanying soundtrack. Gunshots, camera edits, punches, car chases, car crashes everything is timed perfectly to match the rhythm and the beat of the song playing in the background. This has got to be the most musical-like non musical I’ve ever seen.

It’s definitely an impressive achievement and Wright shows off the slick visual style he has become known for. While definitely cool it can feel a little out of place at some points like the opening credits which serves as a single long take of Baby going to get coffee for the crew after a job well done. The scene plays out with specific lyrics from the song playing inexplicably spray graffitied around right as they come into view and right as that line in the accompanying song plays. Now this is probably the most extreme example and while being inconsequential it shows how at some points what’s happening in Baby Driver is more about creating a music video than the music enhancing the story.

That’s the main issue I personally had with the film and it’s just one of taste really, so much time and effort has gone towards these musical scenes though the actual story and characters feel underwritten.

Storylines and relationships feel completely rushed, the characters are really given room to grow or give us reasons to care for them other than on a superficial level. The romance between Baby and Deborah especially felt forced and certain characters actions contradict how they were portrayed up to that point that the audience themselves are left to fill in the gaps more often than I felt was necessary.

Like for example in Mad Max Fury Road I’m perfectly fine with some backstory left up to interpretation as it wasn’t particularly necessary. But as simple as the plot was for that film if the villain had a sudden change of heart out of the blue at the end and called off the whole chase or something I would expect more than a passing line of dialogue as an explanation.

Baby Driver I felt was all style and little substance. It’s not a bad film really it is just somewhat forgettable despite its stylish presentation. The plot and characters feel like they are just there as an excuse to create some cool car chases and music videos which is totally fine. However at the same time the film is brought down a little by that.

Not that I want to say I’m rating this film on a curve, I would have felt the same way about it if had I not known the director’s name or previous work at all. But the soul of this film doesn’t quite live up to Wright’s previous work. Rather than feeling for these characters I felt indifferent to them and what was happening. Actors like Jamie Foxx or Kevin Spacey who I know are capable of comedy and drama seemed wasted on what felt like no more than rehashes of their roles in Horrible Bosses.

I enjoyed Baby Driver as a funny and entertaining rev head popcorn heist flick. Clearly I do think Edgar Wright was capable of crafting something better overall but for a crowd pleaser he’s most assuredly delivered with his latest film.

The Walking Dead Box Set

With Season 6 of The Walking Dead being released on home entertainment this week (thanks to our good friends at eOne Entertainment) and Season 7 about to hit television screens next month we decided that now would be a good time to go back and recap the main things that have happened in each season… and keep tuned to the Heavy website because we have some Australian exclusive The Walking Dead content coming up over the next couple of weeks.

 

Season 1

Our trusty hero Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), the best television cop since Sgt Frank Gilroy, wakes up after being in a coma in hospital. He quickly discovers that a virus has spread right across America and the result are hordes of zombies (called ‘walkers’ by Rick) that will either bite you and turn you or just eat you… depends on how quick you are at getting away.

After meeting up with Morgan Jones (Lennie James) who were refer to as that dude from Jericho in our household Rick heads off to Atlanta, which is rumoured to have been quarantined by the Centers For Disease Control And Prevention, in search of his wife Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies) and son, Carl (Chandler Riggs).

Meanwhile, Lori has started a relationship with Rick’s best friend and Police partner Shane Walsh (Jon Bernthal) as she believes that Rick is dead. Her, Shane and Carl are staying with a group, including Andrea (Laurie Holden), Dale (Jeffrey DeMunn), Glenn (Steven Yuen), Daryl (Norman Reedus), Carol (Melissa McBride) and Merle (Michael Rooker) just out of Atlanta.

Rick meets up with the group and learns that Atlanta is over-run with workers. After a daring escape that sees Rick handcuff Merle to a roof in Atlanta the group head for the CFDSAP where Dr. Edwin Jenner (Noah Emmerich) tells that the outbreak cannot be contained and that technically everybody is now infected… that just have to die for it to take over. He kills himself and blows up the centre but our group of trusty heroes manage to escape.

 

Season 2

The group leave Atlanta and head for Fort Benning. But after Carl is accidentally shot they head to the farm of Hershel Greene (Scott Wilson) and his family which includes Beth (Emily Kinney) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan). Hershel patches up Carl (despite being a vet not a doctor) and the group decide to try and stay with the Greenes, but not everything runs smoothly. Rick and Hershel clash on a number of things (the biggest being Hershel’s refusal to kill walkers – he believes he can cure them), Rick loses trust in both Shane and Lori after he discovers their relationship while Daryl sinks into depression and Carol struggles to deal with the loss of her daughter. Then there is the sad death of Daryl.  In fact the only person who seems to be enjoying his time at the Greenes is Glen who starts a relationship with Maggie.

Then on one fateful night Rick and Shane come to blows, the result being the death of Shane, while Shane actions lead to the ‘walkers’ attacking the farm. The group flee but in doing so leave Andrea behind, but she is rescued by a mysterious figure who keeps walkers on a chain.

 

Season 3

Eight months after the night of horror at the Greenes Rick and his group stumble across an abandoned prison. After clearing the complex of ‘walkers’ they make themselves at home but tragedy strikes pretty much straight away. First Hershel’s foot has to be amputated after a walker bite while Lori dies during child-birth and has to be shot by her own son, Carl, before she can turn. Her death then starts Rick on a steady journey of mental illness as he starts seeing her ghost everywhere.

Meanwhile Andrea and her new found friend, the modern-day warrior Michonne (Danai Gurira) are taken captive by Merle and delivered to a settlement run by the ego-driven The Governor (David Morrissey). After learning about the group at the prison The Governor decides they are a threat and after he takes Glen and Maggie captive a series of attacks between the two fractions start.

After The Governor continues to de-stabilise his behaviour becomes some erratic that he ends up torturing Andrea, something that results in her killing herself, and launching another attack on the prison. With Rick’s group coming out triumphant The Governor and his commanders are sent packing while the rest of his group are welcomed into the prison.

 

Season 4

The two groups seem to be happily co-inhabiting at the prison but the joy is short lived when a flu epidemic sweeps through the complex. Many die and Carol becomes exiled after killing some of the infected.

The Governor then returns and manages to take Michonne and Hershel captive and use them as leverage against Rick. Another battle erupts, one that claims The Governor and Hershel’s lives but not before the prison is badly damaged allowing it to become once again over-run with walkers.

As Rick’s group flees the prison they go in all different directions but all find themselves heading to Terminus, a railway depot that is said to offer safety and shelter for victims. While various members of the group meet Glen and Tara (Alanna Masterson) run into Abraham (Michael Cludlitz) and Rosita (Christian Serratos) who are helping a ‘supposed’ gifted scientist, Eugene (Josh McDermitt), get to Washington where he believes he can cure the walker epidemic.

Eventually the entire group arrive at Terminus and soon learn that the people there are not what they are expected and find themselves being taken captive.

 

Season 5

While the group are being held captive at Terminus they learn that they are about to become food for the inhabitants there. Luckily Carol and Tyrese (Chad L. Coleman) launch an attack on Terminus and the group are rescued.

After that they stumble across a Church run by Father Gabriel Stokes (Seth Gilliam) and while most stay there Carol and Daryl leave in search of Beth who they believe has been kidnapped by instead has been taken to a hospital that is run by corrupt Police Officers. While trying to rescue her the group are shattered when Beth is killed.

Once again devastated the group travel and look for a new home and in doing so are found by Aaron (Ross Marquand) who takes them to the fortified community of Alexandria which is run by a former Senator, Deanna Monroe (Tovah Feldshuh).

Rick and the group find it difficult to settle into Alexandria though. Rick believes the community is not protected enough and schemes with Carol and Daryl to go against Deanna. Meanwhile Glen finds himself at war with one of the locals after the death of a young man. Everything comes to ahead when Rick tries to protect Jessie Anderson (Alexandra Breckenridge) from her violent husband. After being ‘arrested’ her husband kills Deanna’s husband and Rick is ordered to kill him just as Morgan turns up.
