The main cast of Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming musical drama “Elvis” has been set, with Richard Roxburgh, Helen Thomson, David Wenham, Luke Bracey and Dacre Montgomery among the prominent Australian actors co-starring with Tom Hanks, Austin Butler and Olivia DeJonge in the film.

Richard Roxburgh (“Moulin Rouge!” “Breath”, “Hacksaw Ridge”) portrays Elvis’s father, Vernon Presley, and award-winning theatre actress Helen Thomson (“Top of the Lake: China Girl”, “Rake”) plays Elvis’s mother, Gladys Presley.  David Wenham (“The Lord of the Rings” Trilogy, “Lion”, “300”) plays Hank Snow, Natasha Bassett (“Hail, Caesar!”) plays Dixie Locke, Xavier Samuel (“Adore”, “Love & Friendship”, “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse”) plays Scotty Moore, Luke Bracey (“Hacksaw Ridge,” “Point Break”) plays Jerry Schilling, and Dacre Montgomery (“Stranger Things,” “The Broken Heart Gallery”), plays TV director Steve Binder.

            Joining the ensemble are Australian actors Leon Ford (TV’s “Gallipoli,” TV’s “The Pacific”) as Tom Diskin, Kate Mulvany (“The Great Gatsby,” TV’s “Hunters”) as Marion Keisker, Gareth Davies (“Peter Rabbit,” TV’s “Hunters”) as Bones Howe, Charles Grounds (“Crazy Rich Asians,” TV’s “Camp”) as Billy Smith, Josh McConville (“Fantasy Island”) as Sam Phillips, and Adam Dunn (TV’s “Home and Away”) as Bill Black.

Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis,” explores the life and music of Elvis Presley, seen through the prism of his complicated relationship with his enigmatic manager, Colonel Tom Parker.  The story delves into the complex dynamic between Presley and Parker spanning over 20 years, from Presley’s rise to fame to his unprecedented stardom, against the backdrop of the evolving cultural landscape and loss of innocence in America.  Central to that journey is one of the most significant and influential people in Elvis’s life, Priscilla Presley.

Luhrmann directs from the current screenplay written by Luhrmann and Craig Pearce.  Luhrmann is also producing the film, alongside Catherine Martin, Gail Berman, Patrick McCormick and Schuyler Weiss, with Andrew Mittman executive producing.

The director’s behind-the-scenes creative team includes director of photography Mandy Walker (“Mulan,” “Australia”), Oscar-winning production designer and costume designer Catherine Martin (“The Great Gatsby,” “Moulin Rouge!”), editors Matt Villa (“The Great Gatsby,” “Australia”) and Jonathan Redmond (“The Great Gatsby”) and composer Elliott Wheeler (“The Get Down”).

Principal photography on “Elvis” is taking place in Queensland, Australia with the support of the Queensland Government, Screen Queensland and the Australian Government’s Producer Offset program.  The film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.

 

Principal photography will begin on September 23 on Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Elvis,” Oscar-nominated filmmaker Baz Luhrmann’s (“The Great Gatsby,” “Moulin Rouge!”) musical drama about the life and music of Elvis Presley.  Seen through the prism of his complicated relationship with his enigmatic manager, Colonel Tom Parker, the film stars Austin Butler (“Once Upon a Time in…Hollywood”) as Elvis, Tom Hanks (“A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” “Forrest Gump”) as Colonel Tom Parker and Olivia DeJonge (“Stray Dolls”) as Priscilla Presley.

The Great Gatsby

Baz Luhrmann’s lavish adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s great American novel, The Great Gatsby, has crossed the $100 million mark at the U.S. box office after only 14 days in release. In addition, the film opened at the top of the international box office, taking in $43 million in 49 territories and scoring the number one spot in the key markets of France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Russia and Taiwan. The international cumulative gross now stands at an estimated $64.4 million, with major markets such as Australia, Mexico, Brazil and Japan yet to open. The worldwide total box office now stands at an impressive $165.1 million and counting. The announcement was made today by Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution, and Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, President of International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.

One of the most anticipated films of the year, “The Great Gatsby” has emerged as a worldwide counter-programming phenomenon in the highly competitive early summer corridor. Audiences have embraced the drama, the immersive 3D spectacle, and the eclectic music of the film, resulting in strong word of mouth and repeat viewings.

In making the announcement, Fellman stated, “Just as the book has been beloved by readers for generations, Baz Luhrmann’s ‘The Great Gatsby’ has already become a favorite of moviegoers. We all congratulate Baz and his amazing cast and crew on the success of the film, which will continue to enjoy the lucrative summer play time.”

Kwan Vandenberg said, “The strength of the international opening is a testament to Baz Luhrmann and everyone involved in the film. The movie’s spectacular Cannes launch truly set the stage for the summer of ‘Gatsby’ around the world.”

Sue Kroll, Warner Bros. Pictures President of Worldwide Marketing, noted, “We had the benefit of a wonderful collaboration with this extraordinary director and his cast and team. The film Baz put together, with its modern yet timeless feel, including its surprising musical mix, gave us all the elements we needed to create a pervasive and evocative marketing campaign that has resonated with audiences everywhere.”

The film is being distributed in RealD 3D, 3D and 2D by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, and in select territories by Village Roadshow Pictures.

The Great Gatsby opens in Australian cinemas on May 30, 2013.
